Meet your Primary Garden ODE teachers: Amy Mcgrath and Jessica Pantle
I have a 2nd grader and preschooler both thriving here at our wonderful school. My background is in special education and I spent just over 9 years working in the high school setting before I left to stay home with my own children. I feel at home in the classroom, and in the last year have become an avid vegetable gardener as well, so the outdoor environment is the perfect marriage of the two. I especially enjoy watching the children discover what has grown beneath the soil and make the connections between what happened from the time we planted the seeds until they harvested. Their expressions as they taste a radish for the first time are pretty priceless as well! The Montessori moments I marvel at are the quiet ones (yes, even in the garden!) when all the children are quite engaged and working independently.
I’m grateful for all that I continue to learn about putting Montessori theory into practice and for the opportunity to guide your children in an especially captivating environment.
Everyone gardens different; I'm all about the microbes! In 2009 I began to study western herbalism and holistic nutrition with the idea that I wanted to host clients in a clinical setting. During a field-trip to farms and gardens in the valley one day, I was especially inspired by one of them and inquired about employment possibilities. Once I began working on the farm with the plants, my goals quickly evolved to wanting to grow the herbs for other local clinics. Years later I started my company Cocopah Gardens, now Community Roots llc, to reach families through markets and workshops I put on. I continue to study and develop skills to share with others in hopes we can all together create a more natural connection with our food and the food web as a whole. Healthy soil is alive; it's my goal to teach as many people about it as I can and encourage them to do the same!
I am passionate about introducing kids to the nature side of gardening, the little things unseen to the eye that make it all possible. Kids are great at imagining all the various roles characters play in the soil web of life, and expanding that thought to how the soil comes to affect the rest of the garden ecosystem as a whole. I look forward to teaching the kids about important topics like ecology, water and waste, while developing techniques like no-till gardening, harvesting, and seed saving. I believe gardens provide countless positive influences and experiences to people of all ages, especially kids. I love garden questions! Happy Planting!
