All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in mathematics.
All students will demonstrate growth in their social-emotional learning.
From the Principal
Love was certainly in the air this week at Winfield Elementary!
Students enjoyed the spirit of Valentine’s day with read-alouds, themed activities, small celebrations, and sharing sweet thoughts with others. Boys and girls both get mushy on this day– it is always a treat!
Students were treated to a visit by Van Buskirk and Krischke DDS, LLC this week. They provided important information about dental health. Dr. Krischke brought this educational program to us. We thank his practice for teaching almost 500 students that a healthy smile never goes out of style. The children enjoyed receiving a treat bag complete with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and t-shirt!

Teacher & Employee of the Year
Outstanding Teacher of the Year & Employee of the Year Recognition Program
The Crown Point Community School Corporation is accepting nominations for the “Teacher of the Year” and “Employee of the Year” who will serve during the 2019-2020 school year.
The CPCSC will select a “Teacher of the Year” recipient for each of the following:
· Elementary Teacher Grades PK-5
· Secondary Teacher Grades 6-12
The CPCSC will also select an “Employee of the Year” recipient for the classified staff.
Students, former students, parents, colleagues, administrators, or members of the general public may nominate a CPCSC teacher and/or classified employee. There is no limit to the number of teachers or classified employees a person may nominate. Please complete a separate nomination form for each teacher and/or classified employee you wish to nominate.
A selection committee made up of CPCSC administration and community members will narrow the nominations. The selection committee will interview and evaluate the final nominees and select a winner for each category. Winners will be announced at a School Board meeting in May.

Home-School Connections
Stress. We all have to deal with it sometimes. Fortunately, there are methods to help tame this beast when it comes knocking at the door. Coping strategies empower us to effectively manage and cope with the inevitable stress life sometimes sends our way.
So, what are coping strategies and how do we use them?!
Relax and Self-Soothe: There are many ways to relax, but which works best for you? How about taking a hot bath, taking a walk, or listening to calm music?
Positive Self-Talk: It is helpful to hear encouraging words during times of stress, but sometimes others are not around to provide us with this emotional support. Try positive self-talk like, “I’ve got this” or “I’ve done this before and I can do it again.” Be your own cheerleader!
Distraction: Sometimes engaging in self-destructive behaviors brings temporary relief from emotional pain, but what are ways of distracting ourselves without bringing on more stress or suffering? Why don’t you try hanging out with a supportive friend, going to a movie, or going out to eat with someone you care about?
Safe Place Visualization: Find your happy place. Practice visualizing a real or imagery place in your mind where you feel relaxed and at peace. Explore this place in vivid detail – colors, smells, sounds, etc. Take a mini vacation in your mind!
Radical Acceptance: This one is tough. It doesn’t mean we are happy or okay with our stress, but sometimes it is what it is. Life can be stressful. But this too shall pass.
Live in the present moment. This one is SO important! The irrational longing to relive the past or visit the future will only create more distress. No matter how much you would like to go back in time to fix or change something, it is impossible. Dwelling on the past or living in the future means you are missing the NOW. Challenge yourself to only focus on what is in your control right now at this moment.
What are other coping strategies that work for you?

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Over the next several weeks, I will be sharing information about the importance of social emotional learning in elementary schools and how it correlates with academic success. Social emotional learning focuses on how one is able to manage their emotions and respond to other’s emotions. I have begun to share lessons in each classroom to help us practice identifying feelings, understanding emotions of others (empathy), and showing care and concern for those people (compassion). At Winfield Elementary, we pride ourselves on the education of the whole child; and we strive to inspire our students to maintain positive relationships while in pursuit of academic excellence.

From the Nurse
All of our students participated in a dental health presentation today by Dr. Krischke. Dr Krischke is a local dentist from the Krischke/VanBuskirk dental group. Students watched a video about how to fight the plaque monsters that can attack their teeth. Each student will be coming home with a goodie bag from Dr. Krischke’s office that includes a t-shirt and a new tooth brush! Thanks to Dr. Krischke for meeting with our students! February is Dental Health Month. This is a great time to talk with your children on how to properly care for their teeth!
