Kinder Corner
"All I really need to know, I learned in kindergarten!"
This Month in Kindergarten...
From Read Across America Week to St. Patrick's Day to Spring Break, there are lots of exciting things going on in March! In Language Arts, we will be reading books by Dr. Seuss, books related to leprechauns and St. Patrick's Day, as well as folktales and fairy tales! In Word Work, we are continuing to practice the "Phonics Dance" to master our letters and sounds as well as learning "hunks and chunks" or parts of words (digraphs, endings, and word families). We also continue to add new sight words to the word wall! In Writing Workshop, we will be working on writing narrative stories with a beginning, middle, and end as well as poetry. In Math, we will practice combining quantities as well as learn and practice using various addition and subtraction strategies. In Social Studies, we will be learning all about economics! We will learn about needs and wants, goods and services, as well as spending and saving.

Read Across America Week at Dixie will be March 4-8th! We will celebrate our love for reading with our Spring Book Fair in the Library, as well as fun, themed days! See the schedule below for more information!
Important Reminders
- Breakfast-If your child needs to eat breakfast at school, please make sure they arrive at 7:15am so they have time to eat before we begin instruction at 7:45am.
- Take-Home Folders-Please be sure to check your child's folder each night and send it back to school each day.
- Winter Coats-We will continue going outside for recess if the "feels like" temperature is above freezing. Please send your child's winter coat and any other winter gear (hats, gloves, scarves, etc.) to school each day
Sight Word Homework
In kindergarten, we don't have "homework," but we do ask that you practice sight words and read with your child each night! Your child's teacher will assign a list of sight words to your child based on their individual needs. The words will either be sent home in their take-home folder or shared in their Google Classroom. Please practice the sight words at home each night with your child. Your child needs to be able to read them "in a snap" and write/spell them correctly. We will assess your child's progress each Friday. As they master reading and writing each list, this assignment will be updated with a new list of words.
ClassDojo
Are you connected to ClassDojo? Please be sure to keep your notifications turned on so you stay up to date with all the information we share as well as stay informed about your child’s behavior at school! During the first few weeks of school, your child is learning our school and classroom rules and expectations. While they’re learning, we are only giving POSITIVE dojo points. Once students have had sufficient time to learn and practice the expectations, they can earn positive points AND lose points for areas that “need work.” We emphasize the importance of making mistakes as a part of learning. We don’t expect our students to be perfect or never lose dojos. Please reinforce positive behavior at home and talk with your child about the areas that need improvement. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask!
Take Home Folders
Please be sure to check your child’s take-home folder each night and send it back to school each morning! Please send notes about changes in transportation, absence excuses, and any other correspondence in this folder. We check them daily!
Water Bottles
Your child may bring a reusable water bottle to school. Water bottles can be kept at school during the week or travel back and forth to school each day. Your child's teacher will communicate their preference with you.
We Need Snacks!
Our snack basket is in short supply! We would LOVE and APPRECIATE snack donations! Students are given the opportunity to eat a snack before recess each day. If you would like to donate snacks, please send healthy-ish, individually-packaged snacks such as Goldfish, Cheez-its, granola bars, breakfast bars, fruit/veggie pouches, etc.
