Husky Howler
November 12, 2021
Dear Hill-Roberts Families:
It was wonderful to walk around the building this week and hear so many conversations going on between our staff and families. It cannot be understated how important the school-home relationship is and how integral a part of the communication triangle (student-family-school) it is. Please continue to reach out to your child(ren)'s teacher and keep an open line of communication. For those of you interested, here is an article that shows research-based evidence on how important this communication is: The Positive Results of Parent Communication
Sincerely,
Frank W. Rich, Principal

This Week In Music
Dear Hill-Roberts Families,
Kindergarten artists have been studying shapes in art class and this week they learned about geometric and organic shapes. They also started learning about the three primary colors - red, yellow, and blue. They used geometric shapes and the primary colors to create three birds sitting on a branch and cut out a cloud (organic shape) for their background.
First-grade artists took time to create patriotic artwork in honor of Veterans day this week. They observed artwork by Jasper Johns, an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker associated with the Pop Art movement. They started by using decorative edging scissors to cut out red stripes for their background. Then they traced and cut a large star which they were able to decorate using different lines and patterns.
Second-grade artists have been working on a project about architecture. They read the book, 'Iggy Peck, Architect' by Andrea Beaty and brainstormed different features they typically see in architecture. They observed images of birdhouses that show architecture on a smaller scale and were able to design their own birdhouses for a mixed-media art project.
Third-grade artists learned about Rube Goldberg, an American cartoonist, engineer, and inventor. They studied his cartoons depicting overly complicated machines which performed simple tasks. They watched a music video by OK GO which shows a real-life Rube Goldberg machine in action and used that as inspiration to create their own machine drawings!
Fourth-grade artists have been learning about the artist Keith Haring, an American street artist well known for his iconic bold figures. They have been focusing on movement, one of the principles of design. They were tasked to create 3-5 different figures in the style of Keith Haring and add bold lines around them to show movement.
Sincerely,
Maureen DeOrsey, Visual Arts Teacher
