LEHS & LEISD Celebrating Public Education Week!
It is a Big Week to Celebrate Success at LEHS!
ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM:
This weekend (Feb. 23-24) our Academic Decathlon Team competed in Frisco and ended up ranked 5th in the state in the State Academic Decathlon Competition. This is only the third year that our Academic Decathlon team has competed and they already have surpassed expectations and made many long standing powerhouse teams take notice. This success has only solidified the team’s resolve to work harder and move up to claim the top academic award in the state. This year the team has competed in three major competitions where they have garnered many medals and earned the 4th highest rank going into the state competition. The team is determined to keep improving their standing and bring home the top prize.
This is only the third year that LEHS has offered Academic Decathlon as a class. Each year a new topic is announced for the following year’s competitions. This year’s topic was Africa. Teams begin studying at the end of the prior school year and over the summer. Teams then compete from October through December preparing to face off in Regional Competitions held across the state in January for the right to advance to the state competition in February. Teams are classified into three categories- Large, Medium, and Small Schools. Even though each category has its own Regional and State competition, only the top team out of all three categories may advance to the National Competition.
Your Academic Decathlon Team is:
Diego Raygoza
Melissa Chitakunye (awarded an individual Silver medal in Interview)
Melodie Malithong

DECA:
As an integral part of the classroom curriculum, DECA’s industry-validated competitive events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism. DECA’s flagship evaluation process involves students in both a written component such as an exam or report and an interactive component with an industry professional serving as a judge. DECA’s competitive events directly contribute to every student being college and career ready when they graduate from high school. Click here to see a listing of all DECA Competitive Events.

Our pre-contest public show is this week! This year we are taking Journey to the World's Edge: A Folktale in the Irish Tradition to UIL One-Act Play contest. It is a children's show about believing in yourself in the face of adversity and giants. It's free to the public and we will be hosting a talk-back afterwards.
All local Girl Scout troops are invited to the show and talk back. There will even be a custom badge they can earn. If you have a GS in your life, please share this information.
LEHS will provide a FREE SAT® during the school day on March 7th for Juniors
For the first time ever, we will be offering the SAT® to all juniors at Little Elm High School on a school day. Students typically have to sign up for a Saturday test date on their own, but we will be registering all of the juniors to take it on Wednesday, March 7th – free of charge! We think this will allow ALL of our juniors the opportunity to show colleges that they’re ready.
Each student will be allowed to send their scores to up to four colleges, universities, or scholarship programs for free, so students need to begin thinking about where they’d like to send their scores. They will have an opportunity to mark their four choices on their answer document when they take the test.
Students should have received an email from College Board with instructions on how to access their PSAT/NMSQT® scores from October, and on how to set up a College Board account. Please check your school email account if you missed it and set up your College Board account. Once you’ve set it up, you’ll be able to link it to a Khan Academy® account and take advantage of free SAT test prep. Khan Academy will give you a personalized study plan based on your PSAT/NMSQT scores.
Why practice?? A study of 250,000 seniors from the class of 2017 found that 20 hours on Khan Academy helped students increase their scores by an average of 115 points from the PSAT to the SAT. Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy helps students work on the areas they need it most. Khan Academy has 8 full-length tests written by College Board, video lessons, and thousands of practice questions – all online so students can practice whenever and wherever they’d like. And it’s free! Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy can be found at satpractice.org.
Questions about the SAT day opportunity see Mrs. Heller in Room 2100.
Questions about signing up or accessing your College Board account see Mrs. Keisha Brown in the library.
Deadline to Order Graduation Packs: March 1st
Senior Students and Parents
Seniors: Read below for your options on March 7th
- Senior Day of Service - Seniors will have a choice of locations to do community service. (Please fill out field trip form attached below if you did not complete in the Fall and turn into Mr. Hamlin in Room 1214 or to Mrs. Heller in Room 1200. If you are unsure if you need a field trip form, check your email, Mrs. Heller emailed everyone who needs to turn in the form.) Most college applications ask students to document their community service activities. This is one area that can help your application stand out from the rest.
- TSI Testing - Seniors can take the TSI Assessment that is needed for admission into many colleges. TSI has three assessments - Reading, Writing, and Math. Colleges charge students approximately $25 - $30 for all three parts of the assessment. LEHS offers students the opportunity to take the TSI FREE of charge for the first attempt. Based on how a student performs, they may either be enrolled in a college-level courses that matches your skill level and/or be placed in the appropriate developmental course to improve your skills and prepare them for success in college level courses. It is important for students to prepare for the assessment (practice can be found here where you will create an account that will give access to free TSI study resources!) and then give their best effort. Scoring at a level that allows immediate entry into college level courses saves time and money!
