Family Updates for the Week of March 18, 2024
Principal Corner
Dear Jones Elementary Families,
I hope this message finds you doing well. We are getting ready for another productive week at school. We only have 2 weeks until spring break!
Recently, our fifth-graders embarked on an unforgettable trip filled with enriching experiences and valuable learning opportunities to Atlanta!
During their time in Atlanta, our students had the privilege of visiting two remarkable attractions: the MLK Historical Site and the renowned GA Aquarium. At the MLK Historical Site, they delved into the inspiring life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., gaining a deeper understanding of his pivotal role in the civil rights movement. This immersive experience allowed our students to connect with history in a meaningful way.
Additionally, our students had the opportunity to explore the fascinating underwater world at the GA aquarium. From vibrant coral reefs to majestic marine creatures, they were captivated by the diverse array of species on display. Through interactive exhibits and educational presentations, our fifth graders learned about aquatic ecosystems and the importance of conservation efforts. They even got to sleep there overnight!
I am delighted that our fifth graders had a fantastic time in Atlanta and returned home with a wealth of knowledge and unforgettable memories. These hands-on learning experiences are invaluable in shaping their understanding of the world around them.
I want to thank all the families for their support in making this trip possible and extend my sincerest gratitude for the tremendous support and dedication shown by our FTO and other volunteers in making this trip a resounding success. From the early stages of planning to the final moments of our trip, your unwavering commitment played an integral role in every aspect of the journey. Whether organizing fundraisers, coordinating logistics, or lending a helping hand, your efforts did not go unnoticed.
This trip's impact extends far beyond our students' experiences—it serves as a testament to the power of community and collaboration in shaping educational opportunities. Your dedication to our school community is truly inspiring, and we are immensely grateful for your continued support. We are truly fortunate to have such an incredible community rallying behind us. Thank you to everyone who helped make this trip happen.
We will post pictures on our Facebook page.

5th Grade Students Completing 6th Grade Electives
Attention 5th Grade Parents:
Tomorrow, Monday, March 18th, the counselors from Asheville Middle School will visit our students to assist them in registering for their 6th-grade electives. Please inform your child to complete the elective registration even if they are not sure which middle school they may attend next school year. This is important just in case they decide to attend AMS. Ms. Booth will be available to provide any support required for registration.

Mindfulness For Students
Benefits and How To Explain It To students
Introducing mindfulness to students is an important way to help them learn how to manage their emotions and be resilient. Mindfulness is about being fully present in the moment and noticing one’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
Tips for speaking with your student about mindfulness:
Explain it Simply: Start by explaining the definition of mindfulness, which is focusing on what you are doing or feeling in the present moment. It is helpful to give an example of mindfulness, such as noticing what sounds your student hears outside or how the sun feels on their skin. Ask them questions: “What did you notice when you walked outside?”
Practice together: Practicing mindful breathing or completing a five-sensory activity can be a fun and engaging way to spend time together while learning mindfulness. Practice a fun and engaging breathing exercise such as balloon breathing, rainbow breathing, wave breathing, star breathing, cool the soup breathing, or encourage journaling.
Keep it fun: Go on a mindfulness walk and notice being present using the 5 senses.
Empower them: Encourage your student to use mindfulness to help understand their feelings and manage big emotions.
Benefits of mindfulness for students:
Developing increased emotional regulation Increase in focus and enhanced concentration
Helps reduce stress
Develop a greater understanding and empathy toward the feelings of others
Improved Sleep
Increased resilience
Overall well-being and positive thoughts
