A weekly newsletter - December 11, 2020
Message from Ameka Hunt, PHS Principal
Greeting Panthers,
We have one full week remaining prior to the winter break. Midterm exams will take place next week. Please encourage your student/students to review the exam schedule (included in this newsletter), and study. Friday, December 18th is the last day of school, and is an early release day.
Students will return from the winter break, Wednesday, January 6th. Any requests to change your student’s method of instruction from virtual to in-person or vice versa, will become effective January 6th. I have included the link below so students who are transitioning to in-person learning for the first time will know what to expect January 6th.

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT
Panthers,
A former Theatre teacher at PHS was famous for always saying, “We are down to the wire!” I’m thinking of her as I write this note. As we prepare to leave for our semester break please check Skyward and complete any missing assignments. Reach out to your teachers if you have questions and finish strong!!! We all wish for you a relaxing and safe break. There are some superb historical movies out there should you miss your social studies class during the break. Here are some suggestions from your favorite Social Studies teachers.

All the President’s Men- Cuban Missile Crisis
Apollo 13- space exploration

Hamilton(2020) on Disney + American Revolution
Bridge of Spies (2015) Cold War

There are soooooo many more, make sure to wait until you have completed your work this semester to start watching!!!

Hi, Panther Parents!
Course selections will be happening soon and I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight Family & Consumer Sciences classes that your student can take to learn skills that will carry them through successful adulthood!
Lifetime Nutrition is a fantastic option for 10th-12th graders to take, it is .5 credits and one semester! Historically it would have been considered a “Home Economics” class but as we have modernized education and included career-specific skills we transformed the course to be included in pathways! Lifetime Nutrition is part of the Family & Community Services pathway but also a fantastic elective to take outside of pathways.
You can expect your child to learn basic cooking skills like reading a recipe, measuring, cooking methods, meal planning, cooking for special diets, balanced eating, and much more! Every successful adult should know how to cook a meal for themselves. Research shows that an adult who cooks 1 meal at home for themselves instead of eating the same meal at a restaurant will save on average $16 a meal, that’s a lot of savings over years! If your child loves a fun, hands-on course then Lifetime Nutrition will be a great fit!
Best,
Jackie Pasquarella

LOTE DEPARTMENT
This week, we are dedicating our entry in the newsletter to Jeremy Lejeune, a wonderful person with whom most of our department fondly remembers working. We were shocked by the loss of such a impactful presence within the PFISD family and extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones.
