NEWS FROM 6TH GRADE
School is off in full swing again. Since 6th graders are new to the middle school, the 6th grade team would like to send out some information to help students and parents. Please contact any 6th grade teacher if you need assistance or have questions with any of the following.
http://www.knoxville.k12.ia.us/ - This is the Knoxville School District website. Here you can find the district calendar, district newsletter, and links to our grading system, JMC.
Canvas- This is our student learning system. Students will use this site daily. It will have weekly agendas, standards and homework assignments on it. Parents can log into the site to and follow your students. Please follow the directions below to help you log in.
https://kcsd.instructure.com/login/canvas - This is our Canvas page where information about classes and assignments, as well as upcoming events is located.
https://youtu.be/BjnmUXo6Y94 - Here is a tutorial video for you to get to know how to use all the features in Canvas and set up a parent account.
Language Arts Syllabus- All the 6th grade students received a copy of the language arts expectations. This letter was sent home to be signed by parents and return. It also asked about internet access. If you did not sign this paper, please talk to your student.
Remind- Students brought home a paper about the Remind app. This allows the 6th grade teams to send out reminders about field trips, picture day, tests, early outs, etc… Please sign up for this application.
PBIS- Knoxville Middle school uses PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) just like Northstar and West. We reward students for demonstrating appropriate behaviors in all settings. Panthers are Respectful, Responsible and Safe. Your students have been introduced to all the expectations at the middle school. They are receiving tickets to use for raffles, class competitions and Panther store. When the 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes turn in 60,000 tickets, we will take them up town for a movie. Please talk to your student about their expectations.
There is no school Monday, September 3 Due to Labor Day.
FAST Assessments for reading fluency and math will begin Tuesday, September 4th at the middle school.
School picture day will be September 19. Order forms will be sent home the week before.
Midterm for 1st semester will be September 24th. Please help your students create good habits by checking JMC often for grades.
Homecoming is September 28th. School will let out early for the parade at 3:00. Come support the Panthers!

Elementary PTO
Have you been wondering about how to get more involved in your child's education and meet other parents?! Come to our Knoxville Elementary PTO Meetings this year and join a committee! We need teachers and parents to help us move our mission forward to promote positive relationships between parents and teachers of Knoxville's children! We also fund extra activities not funded by the schools such as field trips!
The Knoxville Elementary Parent Teacher Organization will be meeting on the first Thursday of each month at 5:30pm for the 2018-19 school year. To keep things consistent, we will be keeping our meetings at West Elementary. As requested, we are working on securing older students to watch children while their parents attend the meetings. (Though children are always welcome to attend with their parents/guardians!)
Our first meeting will be held at West Elementary at 5:30pm on Thursday, September 6th.
We're serving PIZZA and will be forming committees such as: Teacher Appreciation, Box Tops, Family Fun Nights, JOG-A-THON, Homecoming, Yearbook, and MORE...
Cy-Hawk Tailgate Party
Thrive Knoxville invites all to the Cy-Hawk Tailgate Party on the downtown Knoxville square on Wednesday, September 5, from 3:30-10:30 p.m. Bring your family and let the fun begin: bags, obstacle course, yard games, tug a war, face painting, and much more throughout the evening. Have fun dunking your favorite local “celebrities” in the dunk tank! Meet sprint car drivers, Jon Agan and Austin McCarl! Watch area dancers perform special routines they’ve learned! Enjoy the tailgate foods set up on the Knoxville square including Captn’s BBQ, Knoxville Rotary, Good Vibes, Outside Scoop, Walking Pasta, and Barnyard Tenderloin Xpress.
Which team will win the food challenge? Bring a non-perishable food item and place in your favorite team’s truck courtesy of Motor Inn. Each truckload will support Helping Hands and the Knoxville Schools Food Shelf.
Support Knoxville and cheer on the RVTV crew. WHO-TV 13 will be broadcasting live at 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 10:00 PM.
Don’t miss out on the fun!
