Attendance Matters
“At Union Colony Elementary School we feel that all students should come to school every day, on time and remain in school for the entire school day. When a student has reached four absences from school in any month or ten (total) absences during any school year, they may be assigned to an attendance plan.
When a student is tardy or leaves school early, it affects his/her academic performance, as well as the performance of other students. Students who are habitually tardy or check-out early, (those who have more than 10 tardies/early check-outs in a semester), may be assigned to an attendance plan."
Parents please remember, it is your responsibility to get your child to school on time. On time means students are in their classroom by 8:10 a.m when instruction begins. They are considered tardy at 8:11 a.m. and at 8:21 a.m. it becomes and absence.

Beginning Monday, April 1, you will have the opportunity to purchase flowers for your student to be handed out at the Spring Concert on April 30th. You can purchase a single carnation for $1 or a small bouquet for $5. The PTO will be taking orders in the UCE main office. Cash only accepted and exact change is appreciated. All profits will go towards purchasing a bounce house for the school to use at events.
At the last meeting, the PTO unanimously approved a $250 donation for purchasing supplies for the school cart! Thank you to Jacob, Emma, and Rylan for putting together an excellent presentation and creating this project! The minutes from the last meeting can be read here.

Safety Walking Practices
We are beginning to see an increase in the number of UCE student walkers as the outside temperatures rise. Student safety is our number one concern. Be aware of safe walking practices to help ensure your children are safe as they walk to school, or home from school. The following safety practices are important to discuss with your child.
Walk directly to and from school, do not take short-cuts.
Parents - be aware of the route traveled by your child and practice walking it with them.
Students should walk in a group if possible. There is safety in numbers.
If your child is walking to and from school and they sense danger, they can run back toward the school to search for help from a staff member.
Think of a safety word to practice with your child. Make it sure it isn’t something that can be guessed easily. Teach your children that a stranger would need to say the safety word before they can be trusted.
If your child has a cell phone, find apps that track user location at all times.
Many times we teach our children to be polite. Remind them to choose safety over politeness.
If a student encounters anything unsafe such as a needle, bottle or drug paraphernalia, they should not touch it, they should report it to an adult.
Students should never get in a vehicle, go inside of the home of an unknown, or unfamiliar person. The best practice is to always have your child report directly to their home and check in with a family member.
