District News
Fort Star Project
We are clearing a new path to exciting educational opportunities in Livingston County Schools. The district has begun a Fort Star restoration project to provide many new avenues for student deeper learning. It is a P-20 project that will provide educational opportunities for Pre-K through postsecondary students as well as create a passion for learning in adults and cultivate community partnerships. The area has been cleared of vast overgrowth and reseeded to prevent future erosion. The amphitheater has also already received a huge facelift. On March 11, the district invested time with a group of teachers planning how the space can be utilized both immediately and in the future. All certified staff also toured the historical fort site as well as a few historical sites in Smithland to inspire the staff to think creatively how to incorporate the historical and cultural significance of Livingston County in the classroom.
There is a great potential in all core subjects through this project to provide not just educational knowledge but give students tangible experiences they will remember. If anyone in the public would like to take an early tour of the property, please contact the board of education office at 270-928-2111.
Pastries with Parents
Our last day before Spring Break, the NLES PTO hosted Pastries with Parents. We are appreciative to everyone who participated.

Some Easter Bunny Fun
The middle school did a FANTASTIC job planning activities for our PK-2 grade students! This morning, Mrs. Kenley read “How to Catch the Easter Bunny” and students came up with lots of plans. They settled on planting jelly beans in hopes of getting the bunny here to catch!
When we went back, lollipops had sprouted where our jelly beans were planted and all of our traps had been set off (Thanks of course to our middle school friends). The carrots even had bite marks! After a “hip-hop dance party” we finally found the bunny, and he had a sweet treat for them!
Thank you Joy Harris and her middle school small group for making this happen!!
St. Patrick's Day Fun
Students at NLES had a fun time learning about St. Patrick's Day. On March 18, Mrs. Johnson's second grade class had a fun craft project and made some "leprechaun traps" in hopes of catching one!
Regional Educator Awards
WKCTC hosted their Regional Educators Awards last night. We are proud to have had 2 staff members nominated- Kanda Boyd and Cindy Kennedy. Kanda Boyd won the Cornelia Reece Unsung Hero Support Staff Award. Thank you ladies for all you do!
Future Mustangs Sign Up!
SLES decided to spice things up and bit and generate some excitement with our future SLES Mustangs heading into kindergarten next year by having a signing day. What will be pretty special is when some of these young Mustangs are having their own signing day in the future when they are preparing for their career or post-secondary education. Check out the original post for all the pictures.
Hands on Learning
It's so great to learn about a subject and then see students creatively recreate what they are learning about. Mrs. Fenske's Kindergarten class had fun learning about St. Patrick's Day and even made some "leprechaun traps." First grade students finished their objects in the sky unit by making constellations. Second grade. Second graders are learning about the life of a plant. They are growing lima beans in science class.
Third Grade
Third graders are enjoying learning in various stations - they are working on the following skills -
1. Reading about plant processes with leveled readers and explaining the processes using the vocabulary words and diagrams.
2. practicing content vocabulary with green definition and word cards by playing memory matching games
3. Punctuating dialogue by moving the tag to the beginning and end with sentence cards. Then writing the sentences on notebook paper.
4. Practicing Fluency with an informational passage, highlighting suffix skill words, and writing a short answer response explaining the text structure of the passage with text evidence.

D.A.R.E. Graduation
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program is the most comprehensive drug prevention curricula in the world taught in thousands of schools. On March 27, we had a D.A.R.E. graduation for sixth grade students. Allaina Woodruff was also announced as the D.A.R.E. Essay contest winner and received a $100 gift. Addilynn Matlock was selected as the overall best 6th grade student. We appreciate Joy Harris, Officer Greg Moyers, Sheriff Bobby Davidson and all those who participated in the event and also taught our students about making making healthy choices in life.
Planter Box Project
Students at LCMS have been working hard on a "hands-on" project that will beautiful the school by building new planters for LCMS. They gives them some experience working with saws, drills, and other tools. It has also encouraged them to work as a team. When they are finished students will fill them with compost and select flowers to plant. We plan to build a series of self sustaining planters before the end of the year.
Honor Roll Rewards
LCMS Students who achieved at 3.25 GPA for the third semester were treated to a trip to Atomic City before Spring Break. Not only did they have a blast on the carts, mini golf, and games, but they also had pizza at Noble Park and even had time to throw some lines in the water and catch some fish.
Operation Preparation
On March 12 and 13, students had the opportunity to discuss different careers and trades with a variety of professionals. The students received an idea of the necessary skills and education required to reach their goals. And they were encouraged to pursue their goals. We appreciate all the area professionals who came and made Operation Preparation a success!
