Tomorrow is our Read-In
Tomorrow, Friday, January 31st, our shared family time will be a 30 minute Read-In with your kids! This goes from 8:40 - 9:10. We ask that you join your children in their classrooms or around the building to read together. See you all on Friday!
Update on playground vandalism
Parents - just a quick update on our playground vandalism.
Thank you for some tips that you shared on things you'd seen that weekend on our playground. As well, information was sent in through text a tip that gave the police the information they needed to figure out who was involved in this destruction of our slide. The middle school was able to interview kids and all kids involved were identified, admitted to their part in this and are being held accountable. Evidence was found in snap chat and other social media accounts as well. We have put a work order in to get the slide replaced, but don't know the timeline of when that will be completed. We are hoping it will happen before the end of the school year. Thank you for talking with you kids about respect of property, the possible consequences of this, as well as posting things on social media that can be revisited at a later time to tie you to situations. A good lesson for all.

4th & 5th Grade Know Brainer Competition
Dear Fourth and Fifth Graders and Family Members,
This year Coyote Creek Elementary is assembling its first Know Brainer Competition team in conjunction with the Optimist Club of Littleton. This contest is an academic quiz bowl competition, including both oral and written components, and will require a strict commitment to attend weekly morning practices. In addition, a Google page will be set up so students can study trivia at home as well. Five team members will be chosen, along with two alternates. The actual competition itself will be held on Saturday, April 11th, from 7:30am-12:00pm.
If your child is interested in joining this special group, try-outs will be held on Thursday morning, February 6th, at 7:45 in Mrs. Morphey’s fourth grade classroom, room 206. Your student must attend the try-out to be chosen to represent CCE.
I look forward to seeing all of our trivia-loving fourth and fifth graders next week. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Message from Laura Hamilton - PE Teacher
In preparing for our “Great Games Field Day,” I am collecting empty soda cans. They need to be Coke, Pepsi, Diet Coke and Sprite. If you have any now or in the weeks to come I would appreciate it if you could donate them for one of our stations.
Thanks!
Laura Hamilton
Counseling Corner - Anxiety
I hear a lot about anxiety and worry in my line of work. And truth be told, I have struggled with it myself throughout my life. It's not a fun feeling but, like any other emotion, it's a signal to be noticed and dealt with rather than pushed down and ignored. It's important to find ways to control your anxiety before it controls you. While anxiety can stem from many different situations and thoughts, and can range in severity, there are a few key ideas to help children (and adults) manage their anxiety. Start with the 4 Cs.
- CALM down. Easier said than done sometimes but it is very important that our brains are calm enough to think about and talk back to our anxiety. Check out Coping Tools for Big Feelings.
- CHECK your thoughts. Where is this anxiety or worry coming from? Is there a pattern? Is there a true physical danger or is this a psychological fear?
- COLLECT evidence. Fact-check your anxiety. Has your anxiety ever been right before? What's the worst that could happen and has that ever happened before?
- CHALLENGE. Talk back to your anxiety! Using the evidence you've collected journal or talk to yourself and put anxiety in its place. "Fear, you don't control me", "Anxiety, you are not helping me feel better or be my best self".
Don't hesitate to seek additional help for your child if he or she is struggling with anxiety at home or school. Anxiety is not uncommon in our schools but it is very treatable. Start with me if you aren't sure where to look for help. In the meantime, here are a few more parent resources.
How To Help A Child Struggling With Anxiety (NPR Life Kit article and Podcast)
This 90 minute video by Dr. Scott Cypers, Ph.D. will give parents greater insight and tools for helping children struggling with anxiety. DCSD has made it a priority this year to provide Dr. Cypers 2-day training to all of our mental health staff. Therefore, you'll hear a lot of the same language from Dr. Cypers that I am now using in my work with CCE students.
Breathe deeply and have a great day!
