Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome)

The Overview
Normally each cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes,which you got from your parents.But if you have "Edwards' Syndrome" you would have 3 copies of those chromosomes from you parents,and you need originally need 2 copies.
How Is It Inherited?
Edwards Syndrome isn't really inherited,but it can be because during when the egg and the sperm are form an error occurs. Something called "Nondisjunction"which means "the failure of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate properly during cell division."
What are the symptoms?
- Weight loss
- small head
- organs don't work correctly
- small mouth and jaw
- the ears are abnormally formed
- weak/fragile
- hands are formed into a fists
- the index finger usually overlaps all the other fingers
- webbed/fused/clubfeet toes
This is the feet of a child that has Edwards Syndrome.
This is the hands of a child that has Edwards Syndrome.
This is the head and ears of a child that has Edwards Syndrome.
Current Research and Studies
Test and Treatment?
Some treatments would be surgery but there is a high risk of death.Some test you would run would be blood test,nuchal translucency ultrasound scan.
Kids with syndrome might require treatment for:
- club foot
- facial clefts
- ear/eye/sinus infections
- heart disease
- blood pressure
- etc...
