What Have We Learned this Unit?
Math: In Math, students have continued to learn place value through addition and subtraction within 20 until completion of Module 2. Students will then move on to Module 4 which covers place value through addition and subtraction within 40. Students will connect to the central idea in math by recognizing the symbols that are used and the meanings they convey. Some symbols they will be focusing on are +, -, <, >, and =.
Objectives:
Solve put together/take apart with addend unknown word problems, and relate counting on to the take from ten strategy.
Solve add to with change unknown problems, relating varied addition and subtraction strategies.
Strategize to solve take from with change unknown problems.
Strategize and apply understanding of the equal sign to solve equivalent expressions.
Identify 1 ten as a unit by renaming representations of 10.
Solve addition and subtraction problems decomposing and composing teen numbers as 1 ten and some ones.
Solve addition problems using ten as a unit, and write two-step solutions.
Solve subtraction
Compare the efficiency of counting by ones and counting by tens.
Use the place value chart to record and name tens and ones within a two-digit number.
Interpret two-digit numbers as either tens and some ones or as all ones.
Write and interpret two-digit numbers as addition sentences that combine tens and ones.
Identify 10 more, 10 less, 1 more, and 1 less than a two-digit number.
Use dimes and pennies as representations of tens and ones.
Compare two quantities, and identify the greater or lesser of the two given numerals.
Compare quantities and numerals from left to right.
Use the symbols >, =, and < to compare quantities and numerals
ELA: In Reading, students have continued to read leveled books and use grade-level comprehension skills. In Writing, students have also learned how to write a narrative and complete the steps of writing in a Writer’s Workshop.
During Read Across America Week, we completed an Author Study of local, Muslim author, Hena Khan. We had special guest parent readers as well as a Reading of Hena Khan's new book, Crescent Moons and Pointed Minarets by Hena Khan herself! Check out the Band post with the video of the Reading and the Q&A session!

With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
Reading Standards:
Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

ART
Oil pastel - Starry night style artwork
They asked questions and used their imagination while exploring this work of Art.
Students used their creativity to produce an original pastel artwork in the starry night style using oil pastels.
They experimented with the oil pastels techniques and the types of lines: dotted line, spiral line and the principle of movement.
Spiral dotted lines - oil pastels and watercolor
Then they used watercolor paint and observed how the oil pastel lines repel the watercolors and create an interesting effect.
Students experimented with mixed media techniques and noticed how watercolor and oil pastels interact.
styrofoam printmaking
By using the techniques of printmaking on Styrofoam sheet, students created an Islamic geometric pattern on paper.
They were given a square foam sheet piece, they used a pencil to carve lines and shapes on the sheet then they followed these printmaking steps to apply paint on the carved sheet then print it on mixed media paper.Students experimented with the element of Art: space, line, shape and color, while exploring symmetrical balance, texture and contrast.
