SPOTLIGHTING OUR GRANVILLE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS! SEE WHO TAKES THE STAGE!

A BLAST FROM THE PAST! BSES' STUDENTS TAKES A COLONIAL AMERICAN ON-SITE FIELD TRIP!
BSES' 4th-grade students, teachers, and PTO volunteers braved the chilly weather to participate in an on-campus field trip! It was conducted by Camp Flintlock.
Camp Flintlock, Inc. conducts Colonial American school field trips on school campuses or at their campsite in Four Oaks, NC. Camp Flintlock, Inc. was established in North Carolina in 1999 by Mr. & Mrs. Tim Langdon and began as a summer camp. They had the idea that “People, especially students, should have the opportunity to learn about history by living it”.
Today, the business is a collection of programs including school field trips, overnight encampments, summer camps, and other special events as well as partnerships with Colonial American historic sites.
The mission of Camp Flintlock is to promote a historical perspective while building character and having fun. Students, along with teachers and parent volunteers, travel back in time by participating in five or more hands-on activities. Making an authentic Indian necklace, playing Colonial- American games, and trying on reproductions of period clothing are just some of the activities offered. Other activities include: beeswax candle making, block printmaking, quill and ink writing and much, much more. In addition, Camp Flintlock provides live fife & drum music.

BSMS' BLACK HISTORY EVENT TAKES CENTER STAGE!
Butner Stem Middle School honored Black History throughout the month of February. Students were challenged to answer trivia questions about significant people and events in Black History each morning. They were encouraged to learn more on a Google Classroom that was set up specifically for the month. During the school morning show, student newscasters highlighted moments in Black History with clips featuring notable Black Americans and their accomplishments. The celebration ended with speaker Dr. Joshaline Douglas, who currently works as a social worker. She enjoys speaking to youth, and her desire is to transform communities through advocacy and service. She authored the book The Douglas Approach: Conquering by Building Resilience. Dr. Douglas shared her story of the hardships she faced growing up in a life of trauma. She talked about being a troubled youth who was counted out by many. She told the students that if they believe in themselves, they can make any of their dreams a reality. The students asked Dr. Douglas questions and participated in a raffle with three winners at the conclusion of the program.
In February, students also participated in our PBIS celebration that promotes positive behavior and good work ethic at school. Students who displayed good behavior and completed all of their assignments in class attended the event. The celebration theme for the month was the “BSMS Challenge Stations,” where students participated in a Hula Hoop Contest, Ping Pong Bounce, Spider Race, and Mini Foul Basketball Shootout games. Prizes were available at each station, and students were able to purchase concessions. It was a day filled with fun and excitement!
See all of the excitement in the pics below!
NC WELLCARE (RALEIGH, NC) PARTNERS WITH HAWLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL!
Ms. Dolan's presentation focused on social isolation in adolescents which has been recognized as a precursor to teasing, bullying, self-harm and community violence. Students were taught how to combat social isolation and promote ways students can be inclusive and kind to their peers. What a powerful message!
Students decorated plates, with nice inclusive/inspiring messages, to symbolize, "no child eating alone!" And, what better way to end the event, than with a WellCare cup, toothbrush and hot pizza and breadsticks from Wilton's Pizzeria!
A fun time was had by all!
Thank you, NC WELLCARE & Hawley Middle School for spearheading and hosting such a positive, community initiative!
Please check out the pics below to "catch in " on the fun!
