Week 1 Term 1 SFDS Newsletter
St Francis de Sales - Wednesday 9 February 2022
MARY-ANGELA'S MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou katoa. We may only be two days into the new school year, but SFDS is a hive of activity and new learning. More congratulations are in order, with Xanthe and her new husband Shane celebrating their wedding last week - fabulous news!
Jesus reminds us that it is the heart of a person that really matters, and in Te Ao Māori perspective the importance of people is also honoured:
“He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!”.
The SFDS staff team have all been working hard to get to know each of the people/children in our care, and to model Gospel values.
Anaphylaxis training
Yesterday, all the staff took part in Anaphylaxis training, so that we can support those children who have severe allergies in our school. A number of our tamariki have ongoing health conditions, so we are also reviewing our systems for responding to medical events and emergencies that may occur throughout the school day.
Covid Updates
The Year 4-8 students have adjusted remarkably well to the discomfort of wearing a mask when inside. Thank you to our community for supporting us with this national directive. We have also begun monitoring the air quality of our indoor learning spaces, using a CO2 monitor. This will provide an intriguing science-based inquiry for the children, so that they learn to control the ventilation of their classrooms.
From a leadership perspective, we are currently finalising our COVID Business Continuity Plan which sounds very corporate, but basically involves planning ahead for any of our staff and students who may become unwell or be required to self-isolate. We will be well prepared and keep you well informed should our school community be impacted by a community case of Covid.
Thank you also for your support with following our Covid Protection Framework to keep everyone safe. Please remember to get in touch if you have any concerns or would just like to have a chat.
Ngā mihi nui kia koutou

A Student's Prayer for a New School Year
Lord Jesus, I ask for Your help as I begin this new school year.
Allow me to experience Your presence in the many blessings You put before me.
Open my eyes to the new challenges and exciting opportunities that this new school year brings. Open my heart and mind to new friends and new teachers.
Give me a generous spirit to be enthusiastic with my studies and courage to accept new opportunities.
Help me to be attentive to my teachers and let me experience Your presence in my new friends. Jesus, inspire me to do my best this year!
Amen

If you require a special fitting or are new to the school please contact the school office and we can organize a booking.
PE DAYS
Please send your child/ren in PE Gear on the following days.

Papatuanuku (Years 4-6) Tuesday and Wednesday.
Ranginui (Year 7 & 8) Tuesday and Friday.
ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please phone the school office by 9.00am or send a message through our school app so that their absence can be accounted for. This is most important to alleviate any concerns about their whereabouts. If no communication has been received from parents then the school will contact you by text.
Children who are late (arriving after the 9am bell) need to report to the office foyer and sign in on our Vistab system, in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, an email to the school office is required.
HEAD INJURIES
Our policy around any head injuries is that we notify parents if a child receives any type of bump/knock to the head. We have been calling parents and leaving messages, however we know that many people are unable to answer their phones or check their voice messages so we have decided to start texting notifications.
In the case of a minor head injury we will text; anything more serious we will call. If you receive a text and are concerned please feel free to call us back for further details.
