From the Desk of Superintendent Suzanne Cybulla
Welcome Back and Happy New Year!
With the start of a new year comes the promise of new possibilities; the chance to set new goals or start fresh on a new idea. Each day is a new opportunity.
This school year had been a wonderful one so far and we are all looking forward to the great things that will be in store for our students and staff in 2019.
We are lucky and thankful for the continued support of our communities that create these great opportunities for our students. Together we can!

Welcome additions to Curriculum Department
In addition to being a SCHS chemistry teacher, Mr. Jason Perrin is taking on the role of Secondary Curriculum Coordinator concentrating his efforts and expertise to the development and growth of the East China Professional Learning Communities (PLC). This powerful collaborative process is when teachers working together, guided by strong data and experience, make instructional decisions for our students.
Mrs. Kelly Robbins will continue as a Belle River Elementary teacher but she has also taken on the role of Elementary Curriculum Coordinator. Mrs. Robbins has thirty years of teaching experience and her depth of knowledge and understanding of early learners and their needs will be instrumental in the evolution of our elementary instruction.
MCHS chemistry teacher, Mr. Michael Walling, will add to his duties the title of Secondary Curriculum Coordinator. He will be working with our teaching teams to continue the development of common assessments that are aligned to the State of Michigan standards. Mr. Walling will also be lending his experience to the roll-out of the NWEA assessment.
Please join us in congratulating them in their new roles!
January is School Board Recognition Month "Thank you!"
The key to a brighter future for Michigan’s children is a strong public education system. Every day, students count on public schools to help prepare them for a successful future. Whether they understand it or not, they count on adults across the state ensuring they have access to resources to help them learn, keep their buildings safe and have qualified teachers to guide them. It takes a pure, unwavering commitment to a community to make this all possible.
A school board members job is to establish a vision for the education program, design a structure to achieve that vision, ensure schools are accountable to the community and strongly advocate for continuous improvement in student learning. The job of a school board member is tough, the hours long and the thanks few and far between. Too often we’re quick to criticize school board members without really understanding the complex nature of their decisions. We have to remember to take time to thank them for their untiring efforts.
The month of January marks the observance of School Board Recognition Month. This is an opportunity to show our year-round appreciation for these servant leaders and begin to better understand how local trustees work together to prepare today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders. We encourage you to join with others throughout our community, state and nation to salute the men and women who provide grassroots governance of public schools.
happenings at St. Clair Middle School
December Pep/P2 Assembly
On December 14th, SCMS had another school-wide Pep/P2 assembly. Student leaders led much of the assembly and once again The Positivity Project character strengths were a focus. The student leaders organized several fun games for random students in the crowd and the owner of Neiman's Family Market, Bryan Neiman, spoke as a guest speaker! He did a wonderful job connecting the importance of building positive relationships to the SCMS students. A huge "THANK YOU" to Mr. Neiman and to Neiman's Family Market for all they do to support our schools and community!!!! Ending the assembly, the SCMS 7th/8th grade Choir, led by Mr. Higle, sang the "Carol of the Bells" A capella. Also a big kudos goes out to Mr. Fryer and the band students for playing as students entered and exited the gym. All in all, it was a great assembly and much kudos has to go out to the student leaders of SCMS! You can see additional pictures by CLICKING HERE compliments of the SCMS Yearbook students.
SCMS Students are Giving Back
Two awesome groups at St. Clair Middle School did some amazing things this holiday season. The SCMS Junior Honor Society sold candy canes through the month of December, took the money raised and purchased toys for the Toys for Tots program. Additionally, the SCMS Student Council held a canned food drive and collected almost 1,000 non-perishable food items and donated them to a local food pantry. Both efforts were completely student led and we are proud of the great things our students are doing in our communities!
