Welcome to Fourth Grade!!
I am so excited to be part of your child's life! Can I just tell you how wonderful this year is going to be? I truly believe this group of kiddos has been placed together for a reason in my class, and I can not WAIT to see how this year unfolds.
Typically Meet the Teacher night is busy, exciting and full of papers to take home. I'll try to include everything you need to know here so you'll have a few less things to keep track of! In addition, I will email any other documents you may need.
Who is Mrs. Tisch?
I always knew I wanted to be an educator. From a very early age, I was teaching my pretend classroom and keeping grades in my homemade grade book, which I still have. If you ask, I'll show it to you! I graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Elementary Education coupled with a Kindergarten Endorsement. I then furthered my education graduating with my Master’s Degree from Nova Southeastern University. Over the course of seventeen years teaching here in Zionsville, I have taught second, third, and fourth grade. I have actually taught in each of Zionsville elementary schools at one point or another. I love something about each of these grade levels, but fourth grade is special. The kids are at a special place in life as they prepare for middle school. It is going to be busy and there is a lot of curriculum to learn, but there will be a lot of fun this year in doing so. They are ready. I already know you have done a fantastic job preparing them up to this point, and they can do it!
You will notice my classroom has a theme of superheroes. Superheroes you might ask? This world is calling for super people to do super things, including your child. I believe in your child. I believe all my students have the power to be an asset to this classroom and our world. We are going to spend the year not only learning academics, but how to enhance the power within each of us to do important things.
It’s going to be a super year! I'm so glad you will join us for the adventure!

Multiplication Facts
These lovely facts are so important for the kids to know by heart. It seems as though everything we do in math involves this skill. I will be assessing what the kids already know and the facts they still need to memorize during the first few weeks of school. The sooner they are all memorized, the easier math will be. Rather than doing timed tests, your child will have five facts to practice. When they know them, I will spend a few minutes ensuring they know them at school and five more will then be assigned. It would be good start working on these at home. Once facts are assigned, this will be part of your child's homework until they are learned. Then on to division!
Arrival and Dismissal
School starts at 7:50am and ends at 2:30. If you are dropping your child off before school, he/she will need to wait at the front office until the bell has rung. If you are picking your child up at the office after school, I will need a written note from you notifying me of the change in schedule. This is school policy and must be followed to ensure the safety of your child. If I do not get a note from you but your child says there is a change in his/her normal transportation, I will make every effort to call you for your verbal permission. When in doubt, please take the time to write a note. Also, children are not allowed to ride the bus home with a friend. If they ride the same bus as their friend, they may, but they cannot ride a different bus then the one they ride every day.
Important: For any last minute changes in your child’s transportation, you must call the office and talk to one of the secretaries by 2:00. I often do not have an opportunity to check my voicemail and/or e-mail during the day and may not get the message.
Birthdays
According to Union Elementary’s current wellness policy, we are asking students not to bring in birthday treats. Also, please do not send in birthday invitations for the student or teacher to pass out at school. Thank you!
Lunch Money & Recess
Fourth grade lunch is from 12:15-1:15 while recess is from 11:40-12:10. Lunch is $2.50 for students, and $0.60 for milk only. When you send money to school for your child’s lunch account, please send it in a sealed envelope labeled with his/her NAME (first and last), MY NAME, and the words “LUNCH MONEY”. You are always welcome to join your child for lunch. There are tables designated for you both to have lunch in the café. Check in through the office and then meet us in the cafeteria instead of coming to the classroom. Please only bring food for your child if doing so. Thank you!
***Any time you send money to school, always place it in a sealed envelope and label it with your child’s first and last name, my name, and the purpose.
Snack
Your child is invited to bring a snack each day.We will have snack from 9:00-9:10 in the cafe after specials. Please be sure the snack is peanut/tree nut free and healthy. Your child is also allowed to have a water bottle with a lid on their desk. We do have some kiddos with peanut/tree nut allergies so we ask that the snacks not contain these items. Thank you for helping keep members of our classroom family safe.
Clothing
Children should wear comfortable clothing and shoes when they come to school. We
prefer the children not wear flip flops in hopes to reduce the amount of injury on the playground. Also, please label all sweaters, coats, snow pants, boots, hats, gloves, etc., with your child’s name. It is also important for children to wear gym shoes on gym day.
Planners
Your child should have brought home their planner this evening. In the front cover are the 8 work habit/behavior grades that are on the report card. We have discussed the expectations for each one. If your child needs to work on one of the items listed, I will write the corresponding letter in the planner on the day. Please look and sign each evening. If your child has three or less letters, they may participate in Fun Friday. Each week, we start fresh. :)
Parents at Lunch
Starting August 20, we are happy to have you join your child for lunch at the parent tables. We are still working on procedures and could use next week to have everything down to a science. Thank you!

Room Parents
Our classroom is looking for Room Parents. The person/people who serve in this role will act as the go-between our PTO and our classroom families. They will also help to coordinate school parties or other events. RoomParents are not required to attend every event, but are asked to attend at least 3 PTO meeting a year so that they may communicate information back to our classroom families. If you are interested in this role, please email me by August 31st. If there are more than one or two interested parents, I will use a random selection process to determine who will serve in this role. This is only one of the MANY volunteer opportunities available to assist our classroom during this school year. I will also need various parents for copying, field trip volunteers, and other special event helpers. We are so fortunate to have such an active parent base. Thanks for all that you do!
