Irvington Weekly Newsletter
April 5, 2024
This week was also an important one because our fifth graders went on their annual overnight trip to an OMSI science camp near Fossil, Oregon. (Take a look at some excavators below!) This three-day trip, an Irvington tradition for many years, is a capstone experience for our students, and thanks to family and community generosity, the trip is paid for completely by the PTA, so no student has to pay to attend.
Return of Taiko Drumming
Another Irvington tradition is returning this year: taiko drumming! A taiko teacher will be coming in on April 10 and 15 to provide instruction to all K-5 classes. (This is another experience paid for by PTA funds.) We are looking forward to it!
Volunteers for Arts Night
The Irvington Arts Night is right around the corner (Tuesday, May 14), and Ms. Reed and Ms. Emma are looking for volunteers to help make the event a success! If you're interested in volunteering, please fill out this survey to let them know how you'd prefer to help. Thank you!
Spring Date Changes
Because of changes in our overall school calendar, a few spring events have changed as well:
- The talent show will now be Wednesday, May 29,
- Field day will now be Thursday, June 13, and
- The 5th grade promotion ceremony will now be Friday, June 14.
I will keep you posted on any other changes as the end of the year draws nearer.
Fifth Grade Promotion
Fifth grade families, please save the date and time for the fifth grade student promotion and party! On the last day of school (June 14, 2024, 1:45-2:45), students will have a brief promotion ceremony held outdoors at Irvington School from 1:45-2:00, followed immediately by a fun fifth grade party from 2:00-2:45, with dismissal at 3:00. Please come as early as 1:30 to create a “clap out” tunnel for our fifth grade students to walk through by 1:45 at the rear school east side exit (outside Ms Kara's classroom). Families who are available for supporting setting up, tearing down, and providing some light snacks or easy crafts and yard games are encouraged to connect with Chase Szucs via email to align support (cszucs@pps.net). We are excited to share this special day with your families!
Counselor Corner: April
April: Counselor Corner Monthly Update
- SOAR Word, Career/College Info, and information about why mindfulness is important about how to integrate it into your every schedule
For 5th grade Families: Please complete the electives form with your student before April 12t for Harriet Tubman MS. Even if you have other plans, please complete the form, just in case, so that your student will get classes that they like if they find themselves a student there.
Sneaker Recycling Reminder: Thank you so much for continuing to keep your old sneakers out of landfills. Please remember that we ONLY take athletic sneakers that have both shoes. They will not accept any other kinds of shoes or sneakers that are unmatched. If you have other kinds of shoes that could be used again, please donate them to our clothing bin. I appreciate your help with this.
Parents of Neurodiverse Students Coffee Chat
If you are a parent or caregiver of an Irvington student who identifies as neurodiverse, we are having a coffee chat in the PTA room on Monday, April 8, after drop off (around 9 am). This is an inclusive group with a broad definition of neurodiversity. If you're interested in this group and wondering if it's for you, come chat with us over coffee and find out. Contact Amy Dachtler at amydachtler@gmail.com with any questions.
