Dear Cavalier Families,
Congratulations to all of the scholars who were recognized at last week's Principal's Honor Roll awards ceremony. It is one of my favorite events of the year to celebrate all the hard work put into first semester. It is very rewarding for me to see your family here at school also honoring your efforts. We are all very proud of you!
On another note, students and parents, we have a very important test coming up for over 200 of our students. The test is called the Summative ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California). Here is the list of students by ID number set to take the test this year. The purpose of the assessment is to determine the English proficiency level of students with the goal of scoring high enough to reclassify as fluent in English. Other measures are also part of the annual reclassification process, including a 2.0 gpa in core content areas, Lexile Reading Level, the score in the ELA SBAC test or ELA End of Course Exam and English Teacher Recommendation. Reclassification as English proficient allows students the choice of electives in their schedule.
The ELPAC has four domains: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. We will begin the reading and writing portion next week. How can you help support your student? There are practice tests available online for each domain. Please click here. You can sign in as a guest and the ELPAC practice tests are found near the bottom after scrolling down a bit past the other practice tests. This is a great opportunity to see how the test looks like and get a feel for what is asked on the test in each of the four domains. All students who are taking the test this year were given the information on what they might have missed last time they took the test. Students can use their iPads to take the practice tests. Please encourage your student to prepare for this important assessment. It will start on March 11 next week for Listening, Reading and Writing, and continue after Spring Break.
