He was the first black man to attend John Hopkins University. He live in Winnsboro, South Carolina. He was sent to the Fairfield Institute to study, earning a scholarship to Howard University. He spent his teaching career at Howard University and actually died on the compass!He was the sixth out of tenth kid. His dad was a confederate soldier and mother was a former slave. At John Hopkins University, where he did post-graduate work in mathematics, physics, and astronomy until 1889. After graduating from Howard in 1889, having excelled in Latin, Greek as well as math and sociology, Miller secured a position in the u.s. Pension office.
