OCTOBER'S PAWS-ITIVE CHARACTER TRAIT IS...
COURAGE!
The PAWS-ITIVE Character Trait for the month of October is COURAGE. Courageous people tell the truth regardless of the consequence.
Fire Safety Day
For Fire Prevention Week, the Townville Fire Department came to visit us today to give a fire safety presentation to our students in grades Pre-K - Grade 3. We always look forward to their visit each fall. Thanks for keeping us safe! And a special thanks to Ms. McPherson for setting this up each year!
AG Encounter (Grade 5)
On Tuesday, October 4 our 5th grade students participated in Crawford County’s Ag Encounter! Experts from the agricultural community shared their knowledge and expertise about agriculture and where their food comes from. We also received Ag Encounter lesson plans to integrate into our curriculum as a follow up to this event. We hope everyone had a great learning experience and a fun-filled day!
CRAWFORD COUNTY CAREER & TECHNICAL CENTER
On Thursday, October 6, our 5th graders attended an assembly with representatives from the CCCTC (Crawford County Career & Technical Center) to hear about the different shops available over there once they reach high school. In 6th grade, our students then take a field trip over to the CCCTC to see the facility and take a tour.
GRADE LEVEL NEWS
Kindergarten
In October, kindergarten is working hard on remembering all their PBIS expectations. In reading we are learning how to read non-fiction and storybooks with great book handling skills. In phonics, we are working on our names-recognizing the letters in them and the sounds they make. In writing, we are working on a verbal story and drawing a detailed picture to match our story. In math we are working on numbers 0-5, recognizing, counting and grouping. Finally with social skills , we are working on "feelings" and empathy.
Some special days in Kindergarten: Fire Safety, Stranger safety and Fall.
GRADE 1
In first grade, we are all getting used to the routines and settling into everyday classroom learning. In phonics, we are focusing on ABC letter sounds and studying the parts of words. For reading, we are practicing how to build good reading habits and solving unknown words. In math, we are practicing both addition and subtraction skills and strategies. Narrative writing is our focus during this time, so our students are writing about things they have done/experienced in their lives. We also call this type of writing "small moments".
GRADE 2
Second grade is moving into our second units in reading, phonics, and writing. In reading, students will become experts while reading nonfiction. In writing, students will be working on nonfiction writing. They will be teaching all that they know and researching topics. In phonics, students will be working on tackling multisyllabic words. This includes working with consonant le, hard and soft c and g, and word endings. In math, second graders will be working on adding within 100 and will continue to build fluency with addition and subtraction facts.
GRADE 3
Reading- The students have been building the skills on how to make reading the best for them. They have been learning the skills needed on how to become young readers who care about reading.
Math- The students have been working on understanding multiplication and division of whole numbers. They also have been learning about using patterns to solve multiplication problems. The new math program is stressing application of the skills and not just memorization of facts, so the students are really getting a nice challenge.
Writing- The students have been working on their Personal Narrative Unit. The students have chosen a small moment to take through the entire writing process and this upcoming week, they will be publishing celebrating their stories.
GRADE 4
In 4th grade reading, 4th grade is currently working on interpreting characters with the use of the mentor text Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo. We are working on making inferences about characters along with studying how characters within stories change.
In 4th grade writing, we are currently writing Realistic Fiction stories. Students have worked on creating story arcs of possible story ideas and have just recently written their rough drafts of their stories. We are going to be moving into revising and publishing in the near future.
Social Studies
In grade 4 we are studying map and globe skills. We are learning about political, physical and elevation maps. Did you know that the highest mountain peak in Pennsylvania (Penn's Woods) is Mount Davis at 3,215 feet above sea level? Mt. Washington, New Hampshire is the highest peak in Northeastern United States at 6,288 ft. and the tallest peak in all of North America is Mt. McKinley (Denali-"the great one") at 20,310 feet. One more amazing fact is that Earth spins at around 1,000 miles per hour (mph). Hang on!!!
Science
At 1,000 mph we will move into science to explore Energy and Motion on October 5, 2022. See you then.
Math
The major focus of our learning is continuing to strengthen our Place Value skills by working with numbers up to 1 million. Students are expected to write numbers in standard, expanded, and word forms as well as round numbers to any given place value.
GRADE 5
Second grade is moving into our second units in reading, phonics, and writing. In reading, students will become experts while reading nonfiction. In writing, students will be working on nonfiction writing. They will be teaching all that they know and researching topics. In phonics, students will be working on tackling multisyllabic words. This includes working with consonant le, hard and soft c and g, and word endings. In math, second graders will be working on adding within 100 and will continue to build fluency with addition and subtraction facts.
GRADE 6
6th Grade is off to a great start and the kids are working hard! In 6th ELA the students are reading stories, poems, and comics that focus on childhood, specifically the challenges and triumphs children face. Students will continue reading stories that highlight struggles other children have encountered and how they have successfully overcome challenges. In Math class we have been taking our time reviewing concepts that are essential for 6th grade and recently started working with fractions. Over the next few weeks, we will be working on understanding integers and rational numbers and how they can be used to describe quantities in opposite directions. In Social Studies, students are learning about the U.S. Civil War and how that reshaped our country. Many students were encouraged to visit the John Brown Tannery and have an opportunity to earn some extra credit by memorizing the Gettysburg Address! We will be moving on to learning about expanding west and overseas during the second half of the 19th century. In Science, students are learning about living things in the biosphere. They will be focusing on classification, vascular and nonvascular plants, and characteristics of animals. At the end of the month, students will participate in Halloween themed stem activities.
TECHNOLOGY
"CAUTION- this area is under construction!"
Students will apply the steps of the engineering and design process to complete a cross-curricular STEM challenge.
Students in K-2 will be studying famous architecture from around the world, analyzing the shapes they see, comparing/contrasting the strengths of building materials, and building their very own models of famous architecture. Some of the architecture in focus include: The Golden Gate Bridge, The Taj Mahal, Habitat 67, The Eiffel Tower, and The Egyptian Pyramids.
Students in 3-5 will be challenged to "think outside the box," through reinventing their own cardboard box. The sky is the limit for creativity, however they must stay within the confines of a tight budget! Each STEM team was given a budget of $20 and must "buy" the materials they will be using. Students visit the Makerspace store, calculate balances, and keep track of their expenses on written receipts. Some spotlights for creativity include: marble runs, pinball machines, hamster cages, and plinko games. Mrs. Frazier is very proud of her makers and is excited to see their imaginations come to life!
