Miss Lotter's Leaders
Parent Newsletter February 1-February 5
HELLO PARENTS!
PEEK AT THE WEEK!
Math: In math this week, we are continuing our unit on fractions. Be on the look out for a lot of resources over the quarter to support your child in this area.
Language Arts: We will continue accountability in daily five this week! Each day, the students will track their choices and what they accomplished during each round. Students will have the option to listen to reading, read to someone, read to self, work on words, and work on writing.
-We are focusing on how to determine the main idea of an informational text, as well as, how to effectively summarize a text. Also, how text features help us to comprehend a reading.
In writing, we will be starting a new creative writing narrative unit.
Social Studies: We are going to be starting our unit on significant historical events of North Carolina.
NEW CLASS JOBS!
WHAT SUPER COOL EXPERIENCES WE HAD IN ROOM 312 THIS WEEK!
Later in the week, we were honored to have Evan Kafka (Sophie's dad), take time out of his day to teach us about his business. Evan is a photographer who owns his own studio. He has been very successful and has even taken photos for the cover of TIME Magazine! We recently wrapped up our unit on economics which included entrepreneurship. He spoke to the students about his field, how he got started, and what he does day to day. The students got to interview him, and I was very proud of their relevant questions and engaged behavior! Not only did Evan speak to the students about photography, but he let the students take pictures of each other and he took some pictures of our whole class! Below, are some pictures of Evan speaking to the kids, them taking pictures of each other, and some of my favorite poses of the day (The pictures that the student's took of each other will be coming home soon!). I cannot thank Evan enough for coming in and doing this with the kids, and for Christie Kafka (Sophie's mom) for helping him set up and explaining specifics of photography, such as lighting, with the students! We are so lucky to have supportive parents who can take their real world experiences and use them to make our students better learners!
I have attached the link to Evan's website below. If you have never seen some of his work, I highly recommend checking it out. The kids were blown away by it!
