Believe in Yourself and Your Halfway There
The first full week of second grade is behind us and it was exciting. We had a chance to reacquaint ourselves with our friends from first grade and welcome P.J. into our Stoy School family.
To ensure our classroom is as productive and caring as possible, we took time throughout the week to imagine what our room will look and sound like throughout the school year. We brainstormed and created different answers to the question, “What do we want to do in 2R?” and “Why do we come to school?” Your children created an extensive list with both academic and social expectations. The students considered how we might work together so that everyone will be successful in their schoolwork, both academically and socially. This process generated a plethora of ideas for themselves, one another, and also our room! Finally, our classroom "VALUES" came together, encompassing all three guidelines:
1. Work hard
2. Try your best
3. Work as a team
4. Be kind
5. Show respect
Our values have been “published” and are displayed in our classroom.
We also took some time to discuss and understand that all 22 of them are different learners and they are focus of our class. Each day, I will continue to remind them that they are capable of anything, but struggling and feeling uncomfortable is part of learning something new. We have a "Be Kind to Your Mind" board dedicated to this belief. Throughout the year we will add strategies and sayings that can be used when they feel overwhelmed. My goal is to meet each student at their learning need and accelerate them forward.
Literacy
During our weekly Read Alouds, we will focus on the idea that no one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, but mistakes are an opportunity for learning. They give us a a chance to work hard, try again, and become creative problem solvers to allow us to increase our skills and strategies.
Before each Writing Workshop mini-lesson, the students will develop their fine-motor skills with direct handwriting instruction. The focus of handwriting during second grade is to increase writing fluency and gradually work towards writing words smaller. We will begin the year by reviewing and practicing the capital letters taught in First Grade.During Writing Workshop, the students begin writing stories from their personal memories. We will use "Master" authors as mentors. After we review how to write a story by thinking of an idea and then planning and writing the story in order, we will elaborate on how to bring stories to life.
