JA BizTown Volunteers Needed!
Dear 6th and 7th Grade Parents of Taylor Road Middle School,
We are excited to share that your student will be attending JA’s Chick-fil-A Foundation Discovery Center in either JA BizTown or Finance Park this year! Imagine a generation of students armed with the confidence and understanding to take control of their futures and equipped to achieve their dreams. Junior Achievement transforms the student experience and prepares today’s youth for tomorrow’s economy! We would love for you, the parents and guardians of the students of Taylor Road Middle School, to share this experience with your student and volunteer as one of our impactful mentors.
Watch the JA Discovery Center Video to see it in action.
Parents make the BEST volunteers! Volunteers help us to bring the learning home for the students, allowing for families to use their shared experience.
Your role will consist of guiding and mentoring a small group of students through JA BizTown, where students will learn how to run a business, earn a paycheck, and will even have the opportunity to purchase goods and services from within the park!
For 6th grade students, there are four days we are attending this year:
WHEN: Tuesday, September 20 to Friday, September 23, 2016 from 8:00 am - 2:30 pm
WHERE: The JA Discovery Center is located in Downtown Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center Building C.

Great Things Happening in the Classroom!
Mrs. Serna’s 7th grade students began their first Argument Driven Inquiry lab this week. Students are given a guiding question and then they design their own procedures to meet the objective. The students were very excited to use the microscopes for the first time and look at all sorts of slides, including house fly legs and dog tongues!

Camp MAGIK
**October 14-16, Union Point, Georgia**
(1 hr+ west of Downtown Atlanta)
Camp MAGIK is pleased to announce its 2016 fall schedule of healing camps for children and teens. Camp MAGIK (Mainly About Grief In Kids) serves children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or other close family member within the past three years. Camp MAGIK will provide an opportunity for children and teens to meet, talk, and process their grief with professional grief counselors. Time will also be spent on play and fun as a way to help the children heal from the experience of death in the family. Activities may include archery, canoeing, a ropes course, nature hikes, treasure hunts, hay rides, campfires, story-telling, and a talent show. Each camp will be divided into two groups, one for ages 7 - 11, and one for ages 12 - 18.
Camp MAGIK sessions are free of charge for the children who attend. Our Union Point camp is held in memory of Helen Agnes McDonald and is made possible thanks to a generous donation from her son Jim McDonald.
Applications can be found on our website: www.campmagik.org (under the “join us” tab) and need to be postmarked and sent to Camp MAGIK, 3377 Ridgewood Road, GA 30327 or faxed to the office at 404.355.6631 by Wednesday, October 5, 2016.
Due to the high demand for our camps, we cannot accept repeat campers.
Duke Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP)
Attention 7th Grade Parents and Guardians...
Since 1980, Duke University has sponsored the Talent Identification Program (TIP) for academically successful 7th graders. This voluntary program allows qualified students to take the SAT or ACT in the same setting as high school juniors and seniors, thus better preparing them for future standardized testing experiences.
Because Duke TIP scores are not utilized by Fulton County, Taylor Road's counseling department has changed the process for identifying 7th graders who qualify for the TIP program. If interested in having their 7th grader participate in Duke Tip, parents can access their child's scores via Home Access Center (HAC), if they attended a Fulton county school in the 5th grade and/or 6th grade. Students must have scored at the 95th percentile or better on their most recent standardized Georgia Milestones, ITBS, COGAT, CAT, SAT, or any number of other acceptable subtests. Applications should be directed to the TIP program. Additional Duke TIP information can be obtained by calling the TIP office at (919) 668-9100 or going to the TIP website at www.tip.duke.edu/7gts
Important TIP Facts...
•Registration costs $75.00 (or $30 for a student who qualifies for a fee grant/free or reduced lunch). See www.tip.duke.edu/7fees or contact the 7th grade counselor for a Fee Grant Request form.
•Duke Tip School ID: 250348-FA
The TRMS counselors can help with basic questions. Contact the 7th grade counselor, Alexcia Massey at masseyas@fultonschools.org, subject line: Duke Tip. Due to the high volume of requests, please allow 1-3 days for a response.
