Outreach Talk Series: Diversity & Inclusion Panel
Frontier Schools seeks to foster a community of inclusion that respects, understands and celebrates the diversity in its student body, faculty, and staff. In support of this, Frontier Schools organized a diversity & inclusion panel as a part of their Outreach Talk Series with Community Leaders on April 25th. Panelists included Greg Valdovino, Director of Diversity & Inclusion with the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Chelan David, General Manager with Univision, and Alfonso Navarro-Bernachi, Head Consul with the Consulate of Mexico.
The focus of the panel discussion was on the topic of diversity & inclusion in schools and in the workplace. The event began with a luncheon followed by the panelist discussion and then a Q&A period. Attendees included Frontier STEM High School Juniors, parents, local community leaders, and school staff. One of the many key takeaways was understanding the difference between diversity & inclusion – Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance. Students were encouraged to understand other cultures besides their own.
Special thanks to our panelists: Greg Valdovino, Chelan David, Alfonso Navarro-Bernachi
College Awareness Month
College Readiness Leadership Program Camp
Frontier’s College Readiness and Leadership Program (CRLP) is a mentorship program designed to help qualified students improve their skills in academics, voluntary public service, expedition/exploration, and personal development (social-emotional-athletics).
In early April, 37 students in grades 7 – 12 participated in a CRLP overnight weekend camp and retreat at Lake Doniphan Conference & Retreat Center in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Trained counselors guided camp-goers through a host of activities that were both fun and educational. College Readiness activities included ACT Practice testing, college readiness workshops, relationship building, and a guest presentation about STEM fields. Recreational activities included GaGa Ball, canoeing, basketball, camp fires, barbecuing, fishing, Badminton, and rocket launching.
Frontier’s CRLP Camp activities take fun to a whole new level!

Pennies for Patients
Frontier Schools has participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients student fundraiser program for more than five years. Students collect change and raise funds to support the LLS mission: "Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families". Not only does the program teach service and philanthropy, but it promotes friendly competition. Winning classrooms from each FSI building earn an Olive Garden "Pasta Party" from LLS. And to sweeten the deal, each building allows the winning class to pick a teacher or administrator to "pie-in-the-face". Frontier students raised a combined total of $3,242.12!
- Frontier School of Innovation Elementary: $1,222.73
- Frontier STEM High School: $941.02
- Frontier School of Innovation Middle: $710.37
- Frontier School of Excellence: $368.00
Frontier is proud to support the cause and mission of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Elementary Ice Cream Social
Back by popular demand, the FSI Elementary staff organized it's second annual Ice Cream Social on Saturday, April 29th. Led by a dedicated committee, teachers collaborated to provide a fun-filled day for more than 100 families to celebrate the end of another successful school year. After indulging in an ice cream sundae bar, families could bid on silent auction items, visit various stations to play games, bounce in a bounce house, get their face painted, or take home a balloon animal. The silent auction raised over $1,100 – more than $500 than last year! Thanks to all the families who came out to hang with us!

Elementary Garden
“My favorite thing about the garden is that you get to plant vegetables and plants. It taught me you can be brave about all the animals in the garden.”
-Stephanie G. 1st grade
“My favorite thing about the garden is the plants can be colorful. What I learned is that some smell good and some insects can come and make honey and spiders can help save the plants.”

Frontier School of Innovation Food Drive
Throughout the week of April 17th-21st, FSI Elementary and Middle school students competed to see which class could collect the most canned and boxed goods. Each building provided their own incentives but also competed against one another to see which building could gather the most food to donate to Harvesters.
The official count is yet to be completed by Harvesters, but by each school’s estimation, Middle School collected 1,136 canned goods to Elementary’s 641.
