Academic Skills Support for All ASP Students
Academic skills growth is the priority for our federal grant funded AWEsome After School Program, and our ASP team recognizes improvement of literacy and math skills are the primary reason families enroll their students in ASP. Every day, ASP dedicates 4:00 to 4:45 to academic skill support based on communication between school day teachers and the teachers in ASP.
We will focus on how each grade level is supporting every ASP student in our next newsletter!

Weaving
Zentangles
Enrichment classes align with school-day academics and Alaska State Standards supporting student growth in all subject areas including, language arts, math, science, art, music, social studies, and physical education.
Weaving
ASP enrichment classes, including Weaving, taught by Ms. Swift, are aligned with school-day/classroom academics and Alaska State Education Arts Standards. A few areas where this weaving class addresses Anchor Standards for Visual Arts include;
- Create artwork using a variety of artistic processes, materials, and approaches (such as using elements and principles of design, applying artistic ideas from diverse cultures, etc.).
- Demonstrate quality craftsmanship through care for and use of materials, tools, and equipment.
- Demonstrate openness in trying new ideas, materials, methods, and approaches (such as using elements and principles of design, applying artistic norms of diverse cultures, addressing social issues in contemporary art, etc.) in making works of art and design.
Weaving also supports developing fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, helps increase focus and attention span, promotes left-right coordination, reinforces following directions, offers a relaxing, tactile experience, and results in beautiful works of art.
We promise more photos when the projects are farther along
Creative Otters
This ASP Enrichment class is all about creativity and exploration through hands-on activities including art, science experiments, engineering, and baking. Thank you Ms.Guevara and Ms.Johnston for supporting students’ ideas on what they want to learn about.
Creative Otters Explore SLIME!
When making their own batch of slime, the importance of following written instructions for accurate measurements and the proper order of steps as described in the instructions was reinforced.
Slime is a Newtonian fluid and an example of a fluid whose viscosity is not constant, changing depending on the stress or forces applied to it, becoming more viscous when agitated or compressed.
- A common use of slime is as a tire sealant by adding the slime into the flat tire!
- Other common non-Newtonian liquids are ketchup and toothpaste.
