GRESHAM HIGH SCHOOL, 4/24/2020 Editiion
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
First, let me say how much I miss having our students at Gresham High School. The hallways are quiet and lonely without the energy and enthusiasm the students bring here everyday! This has been a challenging time for all of us and certainly a learning experience like no other. It is time to try to get school back into our lives. Teachers have been preparing assessments and assignments that will require consistent work to keep up-to-date. It is expected that students will engage with course materials for each class each day. Expect your student to be virtually connected to Gresham High M,T,Th,Fri- for a minimum of 3 hours per day. All grading will be Pass “P”/Incomplete “I” for the final semester. Students will need to login each day and complete class activities to earn credit and progress towards graduation.
STUDENT OUTREACH PROGRAM
GHS is launching a student outreach program this week in an effort to locate and communicate with students who are not engaging in online learning. For the outreach, many of our staff are using a Google Phone application to call families during this long-term school closure. When the phone number shows up on your phone it will show “Restricted.” During the period of the closure, we encourage you to answer these calls. Our goal is to help you get things going this Spring, earn credit and build skills needed to be ready for next year.
TECHNOLOGY NEEDS?
If you are still in need of a chromebook, please call our main office at 503-674-5500 to schedule an appointment to checkout equipment. Parents should come to the appointment if possible but High School students can also come as long as they bring their current student ID.
GRADING AND CREDITS FOR GRADES 9-11
The Oregon Department of Education has released guidance to school districts on the grading of students in grades 9-11. All students who demonstrate work at a level of a passing grade by the end of the 2019-2020 school year will receive credit for the course. Students who do not have an opportunity to earn a passing grade by June 10 will receive an incomplete on their report card and on their transcript. Schools will partner with the student and family to create a plan to earn credit over the next year.

DUAL CREDIT CLASSES
All students: if you are enrolled in a dual credit class, please check with your teacher to verify that you are on track to earn your college credit. High School teachers will post a P/I for high school transcripts, but will post an A-F grade to the MHCC transcript.
Seniors that have not registered and want college credit need to work with their teachers to get registered, and stay working with their teachers until they have sufficient course work completed to earn credit. Seniors that registered for college credit, have passed their high school class and do not wish to continue with the class and earn credits will need to withdraw from MHCC before the end of Spring Term. If you have any questions, please contact your teacher.
SENIOR INFORMATION
Counselors are working diligently to review transcripts to make sure students have met graduation requirements. Students will receive written notice on or before April 30th. In the meantime if you have any questions please make sure your student continues with distance learning.
We are asking the opinion of our senior class for alternative options to honor their graduation ceremony and gather items. Here is the link for the survey.
GRESHAM HIGH TO USE STADIUM LIGHTS TO HONOR SENIORS
In order to honor the seniors who have lost the last few months of their high school experience to school closures, Gresham High School will turn on the stadium lights each Friday through the end of the school year. The lights will go on at 8:20 (20:20 military time) and stay on for 20 minutes to honor the Class of 2020. The first illumination of the lights on Stapleton Field occured on Friday, April 10.
Please remember to follow social distancing and all state regulated guidelines. GBSD does not support students getting out of cars, grouping on football fields, or any other actions that aren't aligned with state guidelines.

COVID 19 GUIDANCE FROM OUR SCHOOL NURSE
If you think you or a family member might have COVID-19:
Most cases of COVID-19 are mild and people are able to recover at home. If you need medical help, call your primary care provider. Most providers are holding all appointments over the phone (telemedicine). They will tell you if you need to be seen in person.
If you have any emergency warning signs for COVID-19 you need to get medical help right away. Call 9-1-1 and tell them you think you might have COVID-19. Emergency warning signs include:
trouble breathing,
pain or pressure in the chest,
new confusion or difficulty waking up,
running out of air from speaking or walking.
If you don’t have a primary care provider or don’t have medical insurance:

Oregon Health Plan and COVID-19:
You will not lose your OHP benefits during the COVID-19 crisis, even if they are scheduled to end. If you receive an emergency payment from the Federal government, it will not count as income on your OHP eligibility.
Immigration Status and COVID-19:
United States Citizenship and Immigrant Services (USCIS) has said that all people who have symptoms of COVID-19 are encouraged to seek medical care. This medical care will not have a negative impact on any person during a future Public Charge analysis. Read the statement from USCIS here.
