NBES: Principal's Perspective
We choose kindness and expect excellence
Welcome Back!!!
Dear NBES Families,
We are extremely excited to begin our 2015-16 journey of learning. I believe we have a terrific opportunity throughout this school year to continue to improve student learning, academic and social growth and overall school achievement by focusing on providing every student with high quality instruction, a positive learning culture, and more opportunities for parental engagement. We have developed a clear, concise, and intentional plan that will ensure we reach the high expectations we have set for our school community this year. Our school will become a model for learning as we engage students, teachers, and myself in opportunities to develop each of us into the best learners we can be.
We have been very busy since last April preparing for the start of the 2015-16 school year with the goal to be the best elementary school not only in Central Massachusetts but eventually a model for the schools around the state to strive towards. Last year we implemented the Engage NY math curriculum. This year we plan to dig deeper and develop commonalities throughout each
grade level to provide consistency. We plan on holding math nights a few times throughout the year and showcase our learning using electronic platforms. This will allow students to go home and access a tutorial on the strategies they are currently learning. In literacy we will be continuing our work with Teacher for Teachers. Our focus this year will be to fully implement the Benchmark Assessment System, provide instruction through an interactive read aloud, match students with books from our newly created book room, develop and teach strategies to monitor student understanding of text, and continue to stop-question-wonder-think-jot.
One of the most effective ways to increase student achievement (academically, social, and behavioral) is through a partnership between the school, community, and at home. As the Principal of NBES, I feel it is essential to share the story of our school with each and every one of you. I want you to feel involved in our student’s learning and be able to share in their academic struggles and celebrations. This year we will continue to use social media to share that story with each of you at home and work. We will institute the Remind app one way text message reminder daily to update homework your child has on that night. Feel free to follow our school blog mleander823.com with updates on school events as they happen throughout the year. Our new school instagram page is nbprincipal2015 (many teachers will be using their own account as well). Follow us on facebook by liking our school Facebook page (North Brookfield Elementary School). Follow us on twitter at @nbesprincipal. Teachers will use the SMORE platform to share their newsletters electronically to your email and on our Facebook page. I will do the same. We look forward to sharing our story and provide you with the opportunity to say to your NBES student, “Wow I was amazed when I saw you….. today!”
