Hylton Bulldog Weekly Update
News You Can Use for the Week of March 18, 2024
From the Principal's Desk
Hello, Bulldog parents and guardians!
I extend my gratitude to all of you who attended the CISL Conference this past Saturday. Your attendance and support contributed to the success of the event.
Additionally, I want to express my appreciation to those who joined us for the Hylton Theatre Club's production of Mamma Mia on Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday evening. Our students demonstrated how talented they are as part of the cast or crew and worked tirelessly to bring this entertaining show to life, and your support was invaluable. Thank you to Mr. Troyer for directing, Mr. Tutwiler for directing the singing, and Ms. Terenchin for the choregraphing of the dance routines.
As we look at the week ahead, please take note of the following important reminders:
Junior SAT Testing: On Thursday, all juniors will be taking the SAT. Please ensure that your student arrives well-prepared and brings a fully charged laptop.
Asynchronous Day for Seniors: Thursday, March 21st, will be an asynchronous day for seniors. They can use this time to complete the asynchronous assignments provided by their even day teachers, catch up on assignments, work on projects, or prepare for upcoming assessments.
Modified Schedule: On Thursday, the schedule will be adjusted to accommodate the SAT testing. Flex periods will be held at the end of the day, allowing students flexibility in their activities.
Spring Break: Spring Break begins next week, from Monday, March 25th, through Friday, March 29th. We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved break and returns refreshed for the remainder of the academic year.
Thank you for your continued support.
Have a great Bulldog week!

Principal

All Juniors SAT Testing on Thursday, March 21st
We will be offering the SAT to all juniors on Thursday, March 21st. Juniors will be taking the SAT during school for free! To prepare the students for this test, we are asking that all juniors bring their fully charged school issued laptops to school on Thursday, February 21st. All juniors should have participated in the digital readiness check to ensure they have electronic access to the test.
All students participating in Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Governor's School, and Nursing, will remain at Hylton for the day.
On Thursday, March 21st, while the juniors take their SAT test, school will be held as it normally would for all 9th and 10th graders. This will be an asynchronous day for seniors only.
Asynchronous Day for Seniors on March 21st.
For 12th graders, March 21st will be an asynchronous school day. This means that in-person attendance is not required for these students. Teachers will be providing seniors with assignments to complete. Seniors are expected to complete and submit these within the timeframe stipulated by their respective teachers. Students can use this opportunity to catch up on any outstanding assignments or to work on upcoming assignments.
Please contact your studentās assistant principal if you have any questions.
Attendance Matters
Attendance Matters - Tardies to School
Parents and guardians, last week we had an uptick in tardies to school. On Wednesday alone we had over 125 students that were late to school. Students are to be in class by 7:30 am or they are tardy. Please assist us. This week we are aiming for less than 50 students per day who are tardy to school. Students have been informed that if we can reduce our tardy to school number to 50 or below, a special treat will be given to them upon our return from break.

From the Desk of the Specialty Coordinator
This weekend CISL students, families, Hylton faculty and staff, and community members came together to host the 26th Annual CISL Conference! This event brought together more than 200 individuals to learn and grow in our understanding of culture, international travel, language, and foreign policy. An incredible keynote speech was delivered by Mrs. Kyo Dolan, about the various opportunities available to hold careers in different fields in the U.S. Secret Service and how to turn your interests into a career that you love which was both inspirational and insightful. Conference attendees then got to choose sessions that interested them and learned about travel, career paths, different countries, life after CISL, and more! We shared a great breakfast and a wonderful catered international lunch from four local restaurants! It was a wonderful conference this year! If you couldn't make it this year mark your calendars now and plan to join us next year on Saturday March 15, 2025 for the 26th Annual CISL Conference!
The CISL Conference would not have been possible without the help of so many incredible individuals. Thank you to all of the CISL Parent Boosters for all behind-the-scenes and day-of work that you did to make the CISL Conference a success, we and I could not have done this without you. Also, a huge thank you to all of the families who donated items to the CISL Silent Auction throughout the weeks and to the families and students who attended this event. To the Hylton faculty, staff, administrative team and additional student volunteers from AFJROTC at Hylton High School we could not have done this without you! Finally, to my CISL Student Committee, you did a phenomenal job helping me plan for and execute this incredible event! And to anyone else I may have forgotten to thank because this event truly takes a village to create, thank you for helping us make the 26th Annual CISL Conference a success!
We have so many exciting events still coming up this year including our I-Night and Italian Exchange!
From the Food Services Department
Starting this March, the Food and Nutrition Department will be offering a la carte food options available for purchase in addition to a studentās school lunch. These additional items include bottled water, freshly baked cookies, and packaged snacks such as baked chips, crackers, pretzels, and more. These new items all meet the Smart Snack Guidelines and meet our divisionās Clean Label commitment to not include any artificial colors, preservatives, sweeteners, and partially hydrogenated fat in our menu. Students also have the opportunity to purchase second entrĆ©es, sides, and milk in addition to their first school breakfast and lunch.
These new a la carte food items can be purchased using cash or can be charged to a school meal account if there are sufficient funds available on this account. No sales of a la carte items will be available to any student or adult who does not have money in their account. Prices for these new a la carte items and information about setting up and managing school meal accounts can be found on the PWCS Nutrition Webpage.
Host an Italian Family!
The Italian Exchange is coming to Hylton High School! We have 23 Italian students visiting us at Hylton from Verona, Italy this spring from April 16-April 24th. They'll be here for Hylton's I-Night and more!
We are looking for Hylton students and families who want to host! Hosting an exchange student is an incredible opportunity to spark cultural awareness and curiosity while also making a tremendous impact on another student's understanding of the world! Help a student from Italy learn about American culture, your family's own culture and traditions, and American schools by choosing to host! Students who host a student will get to participate in fun activities with their host student and a least one cultural field trip with your buddy!
To qualify to host you just have to have provide the student with a bed in either a separate bedroom or in a bedroom with a student of the same gender, the ability to feed them 3 meals a day, provide some transportation from Hylton after school when they travel in D.C. or Arlington and have a willingness to show another student around Hylton and PWCS as they shadow you and learn more about our school, our country and more!!!
You don't need to speak Italian in order to host, all of the students on this exchange have studied English for years and are in the most advanced English course in their school! They are eager to practice their English and to experience all that the U.S. has to offer.
Any family at Hylton High School who is interested is encouraged to host! Please email Mrs. Terenchin at terencce@pwcs.edu if you are interested. CISL students you can earn up to 20 CISL points by hosting an Exchange Student from Italy!

3rd Quarter Security Update
Did you know that last year 80.2% of our students reported feeling safe at Hylton? This year we have been striving to improve this number. We have the best security staff and school resource officer in the division. They have done very well in ensuring that our doors are locked, and the building is safe from intruders. We have consistently scored 100% on PWCS" Risk Managaement's unannounced building security checks. In addition, our students have adjusted well to the Evolv security screening system.
This quarter, we have a temporary addition to our security staff- Ms. Autumn McDonald. Your students may see her throughout the building. All security staff wear visible uniforms indicating their security status.
