SPELL BOWL TEAM
The Southridge Middle School S-p-e-l-l B-o-w-l Team competed in the 33rd annual local Indiana Academic Spell Bowl competition which was held at Jasper Middle School on Wednesday, November 1. The SMS Spell Bowl Team earned the Class 3 first place distinction and left the auditorium as the night's overall winner!!! Fantastic Job !!!
This year's team was coached by Mrs. Jen Schutte, who has been the spell bowl coach for six years. In an interview with The Herald, Mrs. Schutte admitted that the words this year were rough. She stated that this year's words were really long, complicated, silent letter words that they just had to know.
The Southridge team will now compete in the state finals on Saturday, November 11 in West Lafayette, IN. Purdue University is the sponsor of this competition.
Members of the 2017 Southridge Middle School Academic Spell Bowl team, who are pictured below, are: Tyler Laughlin, Wyatt Sherer, Garrison Sickbert, Gabe Boeglin, Macalia Wilkins, Ruthie Sherer, Penelope Roy, Abi Byrd, and Erika Candelario.

Seventh Grade Happenings
Each year as a Christmas project, the seventh grade students make gift packages and create Christmas cards for the residents of The Waters in Huntingburg.
In order to make this project a success, the seventh grade teachers need your help. They are asking that you allow your student to purchase a couple of items from the list below. Your student will be in a small group that will visit two residents.
Boxes will be provided, but one student from each group will need to bring in a roll of gift wrap.
Students may begin bringing in their items on Monday, December 11. Gift wrapping will take place on Monday, December 18. The seventh grade will then visit The Waters on Friday, December 22, to deliver their gifts. With your help and that of your student, we hope to make this a very rewarding experience for the students and a very Merry Christmas for The Waters.

Eighth Grade Vocabulary Activity
Students in Mr. Wiles' eighth grade Language Arts classes just never know what kind of new activity awaits them when they cross the threshold into his room. This past week, co-teachers Mr. Wiles and Ms. Schepers created an awesome vocabulary activity.
Students collaborated with each other to use their new vocabulary words to create interactive posters. Each poster had information about a word or root and a QR code to a video about the word created using Flipgrid. Students did a Gallery Walk with their chromebooks to see each other's work and study their new words. Everyone did a great job.
A special thanks to Ms. Schepers who took some pictures of the second period class. She shared these with us so that you can see the results of this activity.
