The dangers of Social networks
When Facebook can become a nightmare
The risks of Social Networks
Nowadays, Facebook represents almost 60% of Internet connections around the world.
With 1 billion of registered people, Facebook is the most popular website ever made.
Some of you have probably already sign up, I know that it's a really cool website, and i'm not going to deny that, i do have an account too. But, if you want to enjoy social networks without getting in any troubles, you need to know how to properly use it.
Have you ever heard of Amanda Todd ?
Well, Amanda was a teenager, like you or like me, but she has been blackmailed, bullied, and physically assaulted. Her story became famous on internet after she commited suicide, in 2012. This tragic story illustrates the dangers of Social Networks.
But Amanda isn't the only teenager who has been cyberbullied.
The statistics are alarming, indeed :
- Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online. 1 in 4 said that it happened more than once.
- 70% of students report seeing frequent bullying online.
- Bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide.
How to properly use Social Networks ?
Here are some steps you should follow :
Think before you click !
Confidentiality !
If you want some help, ask you those 2 questions :
- Who can contact me ?
- Who can see my post, photos, statuts ?
Don't add people you don't know !
You shouldn't act like that, because :
Would you like the fact that someone, you never met, enter in your house, and just take a look at all your family's pictures or the music, the movies that you like ?
Well, by adding a stranger on your account, that is exactly what you are doing : allow anyone to learn personal things about you.
Don't Forget !
Even if Social Networks are an amazing way to communicate with your friends or your family, bad things like cyberbulling can happen to anyone of us, so try to pay attention about what you do when you are online !
