Week of November 2, 2015
Principal Points
What an amazing week!! Red Ribbon Week was truly a great experience. Seeing all the hard work students, staff and parents did decorating the campus, classroom doors, and the Learning Commons was truly something that I hoped everyone was able to see. Thank you to everyone who made this such an amazing experience both educationally and fun for everyone at CMS.
I also want to say that each of your students is truly amazing. The students did a great job of participating everyday yet ensuring school rules were followed. Thank you parents for all the hard work you have put in to raising each of these amazing students. You truly deserve all the credit!!

National Bullying Prevention
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. This month is a reminder that bullying is an important issue to address. Throughout recorded history, bullying has always affected children and adults.
What is Bullying?
Bullying is an unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is often repeated, or has the potential for recurrence, over time. Both bullying victims and those who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.
We need to reach out to the community, parents, and students about preventing bullying. The media has played an important role in conveying the dangers of bullying. When a child reports bullying, you have a legal obligation to report it to the proper authorities.
Bullying affects children in many different ways. This has become a serious mental health issue for millions of families. Students have reported their involvement in bullying as either bully, victim, witness, or bystander. The consequences of bullying can be deadly. Many violent offenders report having been bullied in school.
Bullying starts early.
Research indicates that over a quarter of elementary students have experienced bullying.
Bullying peaks in middle school.
Bullying increases during transition periods such as transitioning from elementary to middle school. This behavior often peaks in middle school, when cyber-bullying begins to become a problem.
Bullying is often a group activity.
Studies show that groups are more likely to victimize other students. It is more prevalent as, unlike individual bullying, it involves active AND passive participation. The group works together to ridicule another child, and sometimes it can get physical.
Young people are in danger of being bullied at some point during their adolescence. Certain populations are at greater risk. Students that are perceived as "different"or outsiders are more likely to be bullied.
When made aware of a bullying problem, take the time out to stop, listen, and then act as the law requires.
Quote of the Week

Attendance Tips
ABSENCES
If a student is absent from school a parent should call attendance each day 817-305-4904 to report the students’ name and reason for the absence (personal or illness). If the parent forgets to call you may send a note with your student the day they return to school. Please understand that absences (personal or illness) can cause the student to have to do seat time to ensure credit is earned. Absences covered by a doctor's note will not count within the seat time calculation, so you may also have your physician fax a doctor’s excuse to 817-498-9764. Students need to come to attendance the day in which they return to get an admit slip before going to class.
***If the parent does not send a note or call the office your student will have an unexcused absence.
If you think your student was marked in error, please call me or have your student come by the attendance office the next morning and we will begin the verification process which requires a teacher’s signature.
CHECKING IN
Students arriving to school after the school day has begun MUST check in through attendance office before reporting to class to obtain an Admit slip.
When checking in the students need the following:
1. A note from a parent indication that the parent is aware that their student is checking in late, and reason personal or illness
OR
2. A documented note from a doctor’s office excusing the absence.
CHECKING OUT
Students MUST have a parent come in to the school to check them out. Please allow us plenty of time to locate your student as students in athletics or lunch may be particularly hard to locate. You may call ahead of time to let me know what time you will be here to pick up your student.

COLT CREW
The Colt Crew is made up of CMS dads whose mission is to meet and greet as many students as possible on Friday mornings so the kids can start their day off in a positive way with a handshake, smile, pat on the back and "have a great day" greeting! That's it….very simple.
This program provides a way for CMS dads to 'give a hand' with the kids at school. At the same time, they get to meet key CMS staff members and interact with other CMS dads.
The program is modeled off the successful Grateful Dads program at Grapevine High School that has already spread to Heritage Middle, Colleyville Heritage High, Timberline Elementary, Cross Timbers Middle, and Grapevine Elementary.
If you are interested in be part of the Colt Crew, please email Mindy McClure, CMS VP of Volunteers, at cmsptavoluntr@gmail.com.
