A Question Re: University Rankings
Earlier last week a caller got a question from an alum regarding how our rankings are determined. Just in case anyone does get that question again, here are the facts:
- Our ranking as a 5th leading research university is taken from the U15 Fact Book (Group of Canadian Research Universities, www.u15.ca)
- “Postdoctoral scholars contribute to our overall research quality and productivity, and therefore the number of postdoctoral scholars is an indication of the research environment on our campus”
- More can be seen in the 2016 Community Report starting on Page 34 of the PDF
SCP Winter end / Spring Calling
- We are happy to confirm that we will be running shifts all the way through the month of April into May & June!
- The SCP will remain open to give all students the chance at taking on shifts without pausing between the Winter and Spring. This will also allow us to transition to new management who we expect to formally begin around the summer period.
- Reminder: You are considered an employee until you walk the stage! If you are not convocating until June but aren't taking courses over the spring semester, you are welcome to continue to work!
Katie's Weekly Wonders
- To escape earth's gravity you would have to travel at a speed of 7 miles per second or 25,000 miles per an hour.
- The Nike clothing brand is named after the Greek goddess of victory. The winged goddess Nike sat at the side of Zeus. Her presence symbolized victory, and she was said to have presided over some of history's earliest battles.
- Camels do not store water in their humps, as it is commonly believed. The humps are actually reservoirs of fatty tissue. Concentrating body fat in their humps minimizes heat-trapping insulation throughout the rest of their body.
- There are 187,888 lakes in Finland larger than 5 ares (500 square metres). Most are small, but there are 309 lakes or reservoirs larger than 10 km². Finland is 338,424 km² in size which makes it 10% water.
- When Louis Braille entered the school for the blind in Paris, in 1819, he learned of a system of tangible writing using dots, invented in 1819 by Capt. Charles Barbier, a French army officer. It was called night writing and was intended for night-time battlefield communications. Louis adapted the system to the 63 unit code system that is used today..
From One Foodie to the Next!
Busola's notes:
- I personally add a couple more cloves of garlic, more sriracha, and no carrot! I also found that melting the peanut butter first was a lot easier to deal with!
- The noodles will likely be warm when you're finished, but they can be eaten hot or cold! They keep in the fridge for at least 5 days so it's a perfect lunch idea!
INGREDIENTS
- 1 lb. spaghetti
- ¼ c. vegetable or canola oil
- 1½ tsp. sesame oil
- 5 tbsp. soy sauce
- 2 tsp. rice vinegar
- ½ tsp. Sriracha (more to taste)*
- ¼ c. peanut butter
- 2 tbsp. honey
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green onion, minced
- ½ red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 carrot, julienned
- ⅓ c. cilantro, chopped
- ½ c. dry roasted peanuts (I used Planters), chopped and whole
- ¼ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
- 2 tbsp. sesame seeds
DIRECTIONS
- Bring a large pot water to boil. Add spaghetti and cook till al dente.
- Meanwhile, in a small mixing bowl, combine the vegetable oil, sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, Sriracha, peanut butter, honey, minced garlic and minced green onion. Whisk vigorously until smooth.
- Drain the noodles and return to the same large pot. Add the sauce, red bell pepper, carrot, cilantro, peanuts, crushed red pepper flakes and sesame seeds. Toss until combined, serve and garnish as desired.
