Instruction & Technology Updates
Is it a Project or Project-Based Learning?
The inclusion of projects throughout your curriculum can greatly benefit student learning. When done well, projects can increase student engagement, allow for differentiation in learning and the development of the 4C's (Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Communication). While projects should be enjoyable and engaging, they should also be core to learning. For the project-based learning to be rigorous, projects must be:
- Purposeful and authentic, both personally and to the community.
- Deeply integrated with core disciplinary content and practices
- Driven by meaningful and supportive interactions
- Informed by evidence informed practice
- Multifaceted Assessment
Projects can become even more beneficial to student learning when partnered with "Problem-Based Learning". This teaching method utilize complex real-world problems to promote student learning of concepts and principles as opposed to direct presentation of facts and concepts.
Take a few minutes to review the chart below. It's a great way to assess if your assignment is just a project or actually project-based learning!
Final Exam Exemptions (Seniors): A Reminder
Final exam exemptions are a privilege, not a right, and faculty members have the responsibility for allowing/disallowing exam exemptions. In order for a Senior to receive an exemption from the Spring Semester Final Examination, the following criteria must be met by the deadline published by the Assistant Principal for Instruction, Assessment, and Technology, which will be May 10, 2018:
- Course grade of 93% or higher as of the deadline (Rounding will not be applied.)
- Student must not have any suspensions in the Fall or Spring semester of her senior year and must not be on Academic or Behavioral probation.
Allowing for this, it is the expectation of school Administration that all significant exams, projects, papers, etc. will be assessed and entered into the grade book by the exemption deadline. The faculty member will submit the list of exempted students to the Assistant Principal by the published deadline. Once the deadline has passed, no student may be added to the exemption list unless an error was made resulting in their initial exclusion from the list. Please note that submitting late work, extra credit, or retesting/redoing of already assessed work after the deadline will not qualify a student. It is the responsibility of both the faculty member and student to make certain that the above criteria are met before exemptions are made. Seniors in courses that are dual credit with St. Mary’s must take the Fall and Spring exams.
When you are ready to send your list of exempt students, please submit them in the Senior Exemption Google Form. If you have any questions, please contact Joe Lascon.
