NEW INFORMATION
Share with Students - How to Flourish Through the End of the School Year!
STAY ORGANIZED - you will continue to excel and do better in school if you are organized. Make sure that your work environment is clean and tidy. Make a plan of what you have left to do this quarter. Set up a school work schedule and be firm with it if you don't have one in place already.
BE CONSISTENT - now is not the time to relax and take it easy. Slacking and procrastination will leave you stressed at the end of the year. Do what you need to do when you need to do it. Keep pushing through until June 15. Also, do your BEST work first. Don't count on redos as a way to get through an assignment.
GET MOTIVATED - think about yourself and what you know will motivate you to work hard towards the end. Remember all the effort and sacrifices you have put in the past 3 quarters. Bribe or reward yourself if you have to. In the same way, create penalties for yourself if you start to slack off. I know that you can see summer right around the corner but do whatever it takes to avoid "summer fever"!
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SPRING WEATHER - who says that studying or doing assignments can only be done inside? Find creative ways that you can study and complete your assignments outside. The change of environment will help. Make sure that you take breaks while you study whether inside or outside. Take some time during the weekends to do something fun and energize yourself outside.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF - make sure that you are eating well, exercising, and getting enough rest. Taking the time to care for yourself will help you remain focused. Adjust your attitude so you can remain positive until the end. A positive attitude will make all the difference in how you feel about yourself and your academics. Check out the Student Self-Care Tool Kit
FOCUS ON THE FINISH LINE - Start a countdown in a notebook or on your phone to remind you of the number of days left. While countdowns are exciting and motivating, it's important to make the days count! Visualize your remaining goals for the school year and focus on them. Take a deep break, you are almost done.
TIPS FOR PARENTS
HAVE A HIGH LEVEL OF ACCOUNTABILITY - procrastination is real! It will result in poor academic performance and poor end-of-the-year test scores. Hold your child to a high level of accountability regarding procrastination by ensuring that they complete all assignments, continuing to study hard, and doing well in their classes until the last day.
BOOST MOTIVATION - if you observe that your child is staying organized, completing all their assignments, and trying their very best, reward them. This will boost their motivation and desire to do more. Likewise, if you observe that your child is slacking off, make sure that you set penalties for low academic performance. This will also boost consistent motivation for the remainder of the school year.
SET GOALS - keep motivation high by ensuring that they meet their personal and academic goals. If they achieve their goals, be sure to reward them.
STAY ON SCHEDULE - as the weather gets warmer and the days feel longer, it is common for students to deviate from their normal routines. They may start going to bed later, eating less, and getting up late. It is important that your child stays on schedule, eats healthy, and gets plenty of rest to ensure that they finish strong.
HAVE FUN - it has been a difficult school year for most students. You certainly have to make sure that your child is on task but please allow them to have a little fun. A mental refreshment is key to their success. Be sure to remind your child to take breaks when study and doing school work. We all need breaks to relax and rejuvenate.

Message to 3rd Grade Families Regarding 4th Grade G/T Math Placement Reviews
The Placement Review Committee will meet again at the end of this year and the beginning of next year to potentially make additional placement recommendations into the 4th Grade G/T Math class as more data becomes available. If your child was not placed in G/T Math at this time, and you want to make a request that the Placement Review Committee not wait and conduct a placement review now, you may follow the Placement Review Process.
Placement Review Process:
Please send an email to your school's G/T Resource Teacher by April 16, 2021 with details supporting your child's strengths and advanced-level achievement in mathematics. Documentation of advanced-level achievement may include:
- Highlights of related strengths and interests of the student outside of school in the area of mathematics
- Demonstration of abstract thinking and problem-solving ability
- Evaluations from consultants and test data from standardized tests administered outside the school system.
The G/T Placement Review Committee will meet to review your child's performance data and the provided documentation. Results of the review will be communicated by April 30, 2021. Placement recommendations will continue to be re-evaluated throughout elementary school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child's math teacher or Jodi O'Connor, G/T Resource Teacher, at Jodi_OConnor@hcpss.org.

A Message from Mrs. Thompson, Elementary Science Teacher Leader
It is with great excitement that I share with you the upcoming emergence of the Periodical Cicada! This particular type of cicada is a fascinating insect that only emerges out of the ground once every 17 years. Your child(ren) will be learning about cicadas along with their Quarter 4 science unit. We encourage you to talk with your child(dren) about what they have learned and what they continue to wonder about.
Whenever natural occurrences such as this take place, there is understandably some uneasiness, worry, or even fear associated. If you did not live in Maryland in 2004, you may not have experienced this phenomenon before either! We want to assure you that this Brood X Cicada is completely harmless, and is a fascinating insect to investigate. We are encouraging students to touch them, observe their body parts up close, listen to them, and even observe their behaviors.
We anticipate billions of these insects to emerge, along the East Coast from out of the ground, sometime in late April/May. They will only be visible/audible for about 4-5 weeks after arrival, and will not emerge again until 2038!
We wanted to be sure that you were aware of these insects coming to “visit” and remind you to think carefully about your own behavior (actions and words) surrounding these insects. Children imitate what they see, and we do not want to instill fear or dislike over something they may be fascinated with, before they even get a chance to investigate/explore.
Encourage your child(ren) to ask questions, observe, and enjoy being outdoors...this will be an experience they will never forget!
Here are some resources that your child(ren) have referenced in science class:
Kindergarten:
Epic! online book Cicada by Mike Shoulder Kindergarten:
Grade 1:
SciShow Kids: Loudest Bugs in the World
Grade 2:
pages 16-21, Epic! online book Cicadas by Colleen Sexton
PebbleGo Animals article article, Cicadas
If the link does not work, the article can be found in MackinVIA > Databases > PebbleGo > PebbleGo Animals > Insects and Spiders > Insects > Cicadas
BBC Studios video: Amazing Cicada Life Cycle
Grade 3:
TBD
Grade 4:
Epic! online book Cicadas by Colleen Sexton
Grade 5:
Epic! online book Cicada, by Mike Shoulder
National Geographic Kids: Cicada
National Wildlife Federation: Periodical Cicadas
Cornell University: Returning Cicadas become smorgasbord for predators
Chicago Tribune: Cicadas low on food chain by high in taste
Video: "Amazing Cicada Life Cycle”
Thank you in advance for being a part of this insect exploration and study of the natural world. Your child(ren) will enjoy learning more, exploring, and teaching you about new things they have discovered! Continue to encourage wonder, excitement, and exploration - this will help your child’s love of learning continue to grow.
INFORMATION WORTH REPEATING
Helpful Hints Form - Planning for 2021-2022:
As we get close to the end of this school year, we are in the process of planning for the 2021-22 school year. One important piece of that planning process is input from you about your child.
No one knows a child better than his/her parent(s). With that in mind, I encourage you to complete the Lisbon Elementary Helpful Hints form below. The purpose of this form is for you to share specific information or helpful hints with the staff that will give next year’s teachers some information from you about your child.
When placing students, the staff, and administration utilize a wide range of criteria that are supportive of the Howard County philosophy of heterogeneous grouping. Some of these criteria include, but are not limited to:
- the personality of the child
- the gender balance in each classroom
- math strengths and needs
- written output
- test results
- reading strengths and needs
- special education requirements; IEP goals
- structured versus non-structured needs
- information from previous teachers and school counselor.
Administrators, your child’s current teachers, and your child’s 2021-22 teachers will read the form you fill out. With that in mind, PLEASE DO NOT use this form for any of the following:
- Specific teacher requests
- Comments (positive or negative) about staff members
- Grouping with friends
- Isolating students from other students
Your input on this form will be used in our planning for your child rather than a letter requesting a specific teacher. Your response is OPTIONAL but is a very valuable source of information to the school staff and to the next teacher.
Please fill out and return the below form by May 12th via email to Christine_johnson@hcpss.org.
Thank you for your input and continued support,
