Acquired vs. Inherited Traits
By Sylvia Prevette
What's the difference?
Inherited traits and acquired traits are similar in that they are both ways you get traits, things that make you who you are. But, inherited traits come from your parents, like having brown hair or blue eyes. Acquired traits are traits that you learn, like being able to read or do math.
Acquired Trait Examples
Reading
One example of an acquired trait would be reading, because reading is something you learn to do.
Swimming
Another example would be swimming, because you learn how to swim. You aren't born knowing how to swim.
Basketball
Playing basketball is an acquired trait, too. This is because you learn the rules and skills. However, being athletic is inherited, so that may relate to whether or not you like basketball.
Inherited Trait Examples
Brown Hair
Brown hair is inherited because you get your hair color from your parents. If both of your parents have brown hair, you probably will too.
Green(ish) Eyes
Your eye color is also inherited from your parents.
High Arch Feet
What type of arch your foot has is also inherited.
