Math (Sanford Expectations)
This week's blog highlights some of the high quality math that is occurring. All math lessons should include the following elements (as a minimum standard):
- Planning using Curriculum problems and resources
- Reference the Learning Target at least 3x during the lesson
- Problem Solving
- Concrete and Representational representations (objects, visual supports)
- Number Talks
- Formative Assessment
These elements must be present. If they are not there is something missing from the lesson. I look forward to partnering to plan and support your math instruction.

PTA Annoucement: Supporting Teachers
Math is an all day thing. This is from first grade Tammy McFarland as a Morning Experience
A Morning Experience rotation in third grade Stephanie Spiroff's room. Most teachers have these Math Problem Solving cards. Easy set-up, easy formative information, and a great Morning Experience curriculum option.
Math is fun in third grade Nikki Watson's classroom.
Math Scaffolds. Students were solving computation problems using the 100s chart.
Students worked together as partners in this activity from Lindsay Child's second grade room.
CRA=Hundreds Chart
Same structure in the same room--partnering-but using a different strategy (tallies) to solve the problems.
Teacher modeling of using of the cubes for the lesson prior to the independent block that involved partnering in second grade Jessica Gibson's room
Patterns with materials present and in use in Rachel Letchworth's first grade room
Materials present and prepared for students in Kerri Nelson's first grade room
Math is engaging. In this first grade lesson on ordinal numbers, a kinesthetic strategy was used by Tammy McFarland.
Number Talks in Kindergarten by Alex Hilton.
Number Talks is on the Sanford Expectations list.
Number Talks is 5-15 minutes of mental math. It is planned by each grade level, and should honor students thinking, sharing their thinking and hearing various strategies. If you would like to observe another teacher, I would be glad to set this up--just ask---and get good at Number Talks, it is powerful and they are even doing it in K so it is a school wide expectation.
Sharing student work. In this Holly McElveen lesson during her math block a student solution is presented on the document camera for all to see.
Formative information--observe and respond to your student work throughout the lesson
Keep the Kindness going--continue to add to and brighten your windows with Window Crayons
Math requires manipulatives
Hour Of Code: Most of our students experienced Hour of Code and I observed Student Engagement
Thank you to the teachers who partnered with Alex Bradshaw in their classroom and Kathleen Ward who provided this opportunity for students in the library.
PS: Thanks to all the teachers who shared their classroom Hour of Code pictures and I apologize for not being able to post them all or list all of you who gave students this time in your room.
