The Nanuet News
April 2024
Letter from the Superintendent
Dear Nanuet School Community,
Welcome to the future!
Our April Golden Spotlight focuses on our elementary school Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs. You can see our youngest students exploring, creating and solving problems in their classrooms as our teachers endeavor to prepare them for a future that is unknown to us and to them. Such an exciting challenge!
Our schools take preparation for the future seriously and it starts with our youngest learners. Learning with zeal is a mindset, and the natural curiosity of children is a perfect catalyst for STEM education and the ability to meet the challenges ahead.
We hope that you enjoy this April edition of The Nanuet News!
Sincerely,
Lisa Brady, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Golden Spotlight
Welcome to the Golden Spotlight! Every month we focus on something special happening at the Nanuet Union Free School District. For April we visit George W. Miller and Highview Elementary for a look at the District's elementary STEM program.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Arnav Mehta and Dahlia Kordit have been named as the valedictorian and salutatorian of the Nanuet Senior High School Class of 2024. “Arnav and Dahlia are outstanding students,” said Principal Mike Mahoney. “Their contributions to our high school community have enhanced our school climate.“ Read more about their future plans, academic achievements and community involvement in our Facebook post.
National Honor Society
Eighty-eight students from Nanuet Senior High School were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) in April. For eligibility, candidates must complete five semesters, possess an average of 91.5 or higher and exhibit “scholarship, character, leadership and service.” Check out our Facebook post to read more and see photos from the ceremony.
Roost Sparkill
Nanuet Senior High School students enrolled in our ‘Introduction to Food Science’ course made the trip to Sparkill this month to dine at Roost Restaurant and learn about creating a healthy menu from Head Chef Kevin Reilly. Teacher Nancy Galdi organized the trip, which included a Q&A and cooking demo with Chef Reilly. Read our Instagram post for more on what they learned and, more importantly, what they ate.
Trout Release
The trout of A. MacArthur Barr Middle School are getting ready to graduate. When we last visited Heather Schucker’s classroom back in October, you could barely see the trout swimming in the fish tank. Now they have grown in size and are ready to be released into the wild in the coming weeks. On May 3, the fifth grade class will take a trip to Kakiat Park, where the trout will be set free to begin the next stage of their lives.” Read more in our Instagram post.
Middle School Visit and Lesson
H2O Go! Our A. MacArthur Barr fifth grade students have a thirst for knowledge and are sharing what they have learned about water with the Highview Elementary third grade class. Throughout April, our young learners spent time visiting the middle school for peer to peer lessons on one of earth’s most precious resources. See photos in our Facebook post.
National Poetry Month
Self-Awareness
Highview Elementary students got a lesson on building self-awareness skills during April's SEL Assemblies, led by the District’s three school counseling interns (Josh Finklestein, Gisell Carretero and Emma Case.) In addition to definitions and examples of self-awareness, the assembly included scenarios for our Highview learners to utilize skills like perspective talking, empathy and listening. Read more in our Facebook post.
RULER Knight
Yellow is where we land on the mood meter after George W. Miller Elementary’s Family RULER Knight. The event brought Miller students and their families together for an educational evening on the Yale RULER approach and how it is used in the classroom. Spread out across the school, RULER Knight consisted of several interactive activities and sessions, many tied to the Mood Meter. Read more in our Instagram post.
Rock and Roll Museum
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame may be in Cleveland but you can find the “Rock and Roll Museum” in Nanuet. The pop-up museum, a one-day-only event held earlier this month, included a curated collection of instruments created by the first grade class, using recycled items. Check out our Facebook post to see what our students came up with for this science lesson on sound.
District Highlights
Stringfest
Stringfest took the stage earlier this month. The annual performance features the string musicians of A. MacArthur Barr Middle School and Nanuet Senior High School coming together for a night of music. “Stringfest is always an exciting event for our music department," said District Music Director Dr. Mark Skaba, ahead of yesterday’s dress rehearsal. “Not only do our students and families get to see each other perform, they can see and hear the tremendous musical growth that happens in our classes."
Total Eclipse
Revisit this month's solar eclipse by checking out photos of our George W. Miller Elementary students who were able to witness the historic event with family and friends on the front lawn of the school. At A. MacArthur Barr Middle School, Grade 8-12 Science Coordinator Hannah Murphy used class time on the morning of April 8 to prep students for the eclipse and teach them about the phases of the moon.
