Breathing and Motion

Respiratory System
The respiratory system is involved in the intake and exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between an organism and the environment-helps you breathe!
Breathing Process
Breathing is constantly happening, whether or not you realize it. First, air eneters the body through the nose and passes through the naval cavity. Air then passes through the pharynx (gag reflex), after passing the the larynx (voice box), the air moves into the bronchi that carry air in and out of the lungs. When you inhale, muscles in the chest wall contract, lifting the ribs and pulling them, outward. The diaphragm at this time moves downward enlarging the chest cavity. As you breath in, you are gaining new matter. When you breath out, you are getting rid of old matter. This is the conservation of matter.
Lungs
Your lung tissue is made up of alveoli (a small cell containing air in the lungs) which look like honeycomb. The oxygen goes into the alveoli and the carbon dioxide goes out. There are blood veins around the alveoli and this is where blood cells get their oxygen which they then carry around the body.
Sleeping & Calories
Normally, a person burns about 0.42 calories for every pound in one hour of sleep. Muscle mass impacts the rate of burning calories. Even while sleeping, a person with greater muscle mass burns more fats and sugar, compared to a person with average muscle mass, or worse, a person with more fats.
What is a calorie?
Calorie: a unit used to express the heat output of an organism and the fuel or energy value of food.
Metabolism
Metabolism also plays a key role in calorie burning. An active person requires more energy and burns more calories. On the other hand, a person with slower metabolism rate consumes less energy. It is during sleep that a person replenishes what he/she has lost during the day. Because an inactive person does not spend much energy during the day, there is not much energy to replenish when he/she sleeps.
Breathing Rate
A normal breathing rate for an adult at rest is 8 to 16 breaths per minute. After about 45 seconds of holding your breath your brain stem will overrule you, and you'll be forced to take another breath.
How energy connects to this
As you work out, you begin to feel your body temperature rise. This is caused by the releasing of your energy. No matter how small the movement, you are always using energy.
