Thanks for a great week.
In The Know
Staff Memo Sign Off - Please read your Staff Memo 'Orientation' and sign the blue form that was placed in your mailbox. I will need these by the end of the month. Robin is collecting them in the front office. Thank you.
Adams Elementary - is looking for a great college or high school age student who might be interested in tutoring a 6th grade former Adams male student. If you know of anyone, let me know. 2-3 days a week, 1-1.5 hours at a time. Great volunteer opportunity.
Youth Action Council - On Thursday, October 11, 2018, in collaboration with the Eugene School District 4J and Lane County Public Health, we held a Youth Action Council Summit at Churchill High School that focused on student health-related topics. From 12-3pm, 20 Churchill students from varying grade levels provided us with valuable and insightful information regarding the most critical and pressing health-related issues students face daily. In particular, students discussed discrimination, mental health, and substance abuse. Students also had the opportunity to create an action plan in order to improve student related health concerns and issues, moving forward, and a mission statement to guide future work. After discussion and a vote, students decided to focus their efforts on the topic of discrimination, and drafted the following mission statement:
Churchill's goal is to create an ongoing inclusive dialogue that seeks to educate, advocate, and eliminate discrimination.
Moving forward, selected students will meet to plan the next steps, which include:
- CHS staff response planning on discrimination
- CHS staff affinity group participation
- CHS staff-student awareness on discrimination
Overall, the summit was a huge success. Students were excited to share and discuss important topics. But, more importantly, students appreciated the platform provided for student voice. The work ahead is vital and students are ready to make an impact. It was clearly evident that students care deeply about one another and about their school. Stay tuned for the next update!

Kudos
I want to thank each and every teacher who helped make CCR day successful. It was honestly very stressful for many of us. I ran interference in the morning and had students go to their respective locations and then made my way into the auditorium to find that many students were having a lot of problems getting logged in and signed in. I got a quick update and review on how to help and was able to address a few raised hands. The crew in the auditorium did an amazing job. Huge props to Casey Tiemann, Gabriel Lemay, Charles Lind, Renee Neill, Scott Schirmer, for their easy good-natured approach with students and keeping the students focused. I saw a lot of professional strategies at work in there that morning. Special mention to Gene Chism for being supportive and always available. Zac Scotton and Nina Wyngethrin for their composure on not being able to get started on time and with missing resources. Steve Grossberg for making a special commitment to Churchill on this day. You are always a Lancer! Matt Myers - You are a coordinator extraordinaire. Thank you for your guidance, wisdom, and organization on this day. We couldn't have done it without you. Thank you to Kevin Summerfield for your help in running interference on this day. It was a busy day and we were running all over. It was good to partner with you. Maria Schaad - Thank you for keeping our Juniors and Seniors in line in the cafeteria on CCR day. Your help in this area was greatly appreciated. And thank you to Holly Albone who took over a PSAT testing room because a teacher was out sick and didn't know about it until 5 minutes before the test started...and she had to then go teach at Kennedy that afternoon.
Parent Kudos to Staff - I have to say, I am so impressed by the entire staff at CHS. We missed orientation because it was scheduled after we had made travel plans, and the office staff was amazing. Then at Open House last week, I was so impressed with the enthusiasm of the principal and all my daughter’s teachers. It’s made her transition to high school very smooth and enjoyable.
