Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on November 14!
Ruby Bridges became a symbol of the civil rights movement at age six when she was the youngest of a group of African American students designated to integrate schools in the American South. On November 14, 1960, her first day of school at William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Ruby was escorted by four federal marshals, and spent the entire day in the principal’s office as irate parents marched into the school to remove their children.
Ruby Bridges is an American activist who walked to school nearly every day and became a symbol of the civil rights movement at age six when she was the youngest of a group of African American students designated to integrate schools in the American South. On November 14, 1960, her first day of school, she was escorted by four federal marshals, and spent the entire day in the Principal’s office as irate parents marched into the school to remove their children.
Today, Ruby Bridges stands for equality and desegregation. She is currently the chair of the Ruby Bridges Foundation, which she formed in 1999 to promote “the values of tolerance, respect, and appreciation of all differences.”
The idea to celebrate Ruby’s courage came from Deborah Carlino’s fifth-grade class in 2017 at South San Francisco Unified’s (SSFUSD) Martin Elementary School, whose students learned about Ruby in class and came up with an idea to adopt a “Ruby Bridges Day” to honor Ruby’s role in the civil rights movement. The students gathered over 1,000 signatures from students, parents, and community members, and presented their proposal last school year to SSFUSD’s Board of Trustees, who in turn passed a resolution approving November 14 as Ruby Bridges Day.
Districts and schools in San Mateo County are encouraged to recognize Ruby’s impact by adopting “Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day” on November 14, or on the second Tuesday of each November when November 14 falls on a weekend.
We are honored to share in this celebration at Clifford. Please meet us at the corner of Edgewood and Scenic at the church lot to start our walk. Mrs. Parrish will meet students there at 7:45 and begin their walk at 8am. Mr. Noyes will meet students on the corner of Clifford and Eaton at 7:45 to begin our walk at 8am. Staff may also join in the walk to school! We will have stickers and buttons for students walking in our groups!

Message from the principal...
Dear Dolphin Families,
Parent teacher conferences are coming up soon! Parent/teacher conferences will be held on November 25th & 26th. These conferences are a way of collaborating with your child's teacher as a partnership with the school and home. We appreciate sharing a role in educating your child. The teachers depend on parents and families to help support them in making sure your child has the best education possible.
Our staff have been passing out those Dolphin Tickets. Dolphin tickets is our way to recognize students for demonstrating the Dolphin Creed: Character, Respect, Empathy, Eager, Dreamer. Students earn Dolphin Tickets for showing leadership and positive character. Tickets can then be saved up to purchase items in the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) School store, 'Dolphin Depot' at the end of the school day on Thursdays, from 1:30-2:00. Throughout the year, there will also be raffles for fun prizes, once a month teacher nominations in which students will be recognized at flag salute and hold a spot on our office wall of fame for 1 month! Ask your child about their tickets!!
I will soon be meeting with groups of 6-8th grade students to get feedback from them to gain insight from their perspective about how we are doing as a school, about their experiences as middle school students, and to gather feedback and ideas about what we can do at Clifford to meet their needs and expectations. I value their thoughts and opinions because it is important that their educational experiences at Clifford are exceptional.
I’d like to thank the parents and families for their continued support of our students and staff at Clifford for the many hours of volunteering, tutoring, treats, and school functions they help run/organize and provide! The outstanding parent/community support we all get at Clifford is priceless. Thank you a million times over!
Clifford staff are exceptional educators and your child(ren) are getting a top rate educational experience. We at Clifford do not take our responsibility lightly in the educating of your child(ren). Some of our teachers are at Clifford until 8-9 at night planning and prepping and some come as early as 6 in the morning to get ready to teach our students. Know that when you leave your child(ren) with us--- we see them as our children and we love and care for them all as if they were our own. Thank you for trusting us everyday with your precious children.
I wish you all safe and restful three day weekend!
In Community,
Jude Noyes
