BARFIELD BANNER
MARCH 2023
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Although a short month, February was filled with some great experiences for our students and staff. Tommie Barfield held their first annual Family Leadership Night! This night was a great success and provided many opportunities for students and families to interact. Our student leaders and presenters did an outstanding job sharing their knowledge of the 7 Habits. I am very proud of all our students and look forward to watching them grow as leaders.
The students and staff are looking forward to our 2nd Annual Leadership Day, which will take place on March 10th during the school day. Leadership Day will serve as a way to showcase our leadership skills to fellow CCPS colleagues and community members. Leadership Day will be very similar to Leadership Night, and we look forward to watching our students shine! Just a reminder that Leadership Day is not a parent event, however I encourage to ask your child about their involvement in that day.
Please be reminded that Spring Break is right around the corner and there will be no school the week of March 13th-17th. I hope that you and your family take time to rest, relax, and enjoy time together. When we return from Spring Break our 3rd-5th grade students will participate in our Quarter 3 Benchmark Assessments. The end of the quarter will quickly approach on the 24th. There will be no school for students on Monday, March 27th as it is a Teacher Work Day.
Please review the calendar at the end of this banner to see Parent Lunch Dates as well as SAC and PTO meetings for the month of March.
Also, 5th grade parents, please mark your calendars for Tommie Barfield’s 5th Grade Moving Up Ceremony which will be held Friday, May 26th in the morning. 5th Grade teachers will be sending out additional information regarding this date soon.
Thank you all for your help and support. We look forward to another great month ahead!
Mrs. Ledbetter

We cannot believe March is already here! We have spring break coming up, March 13th – 17th, and the children have worked extremely hard to get to this point. Quarter 3 ends Friday, March 24th and then we are on to the last quarter of the year! Please continue to read with your child, discuss the story, and review sight words nightly. In math, please continue to practice addition and subtraction word problems to 10 and make sure they recognize a circle, square, rhombus, hexagon, rectangle, triangle, cube, sphere, cone, and cylinder. We will be learning about Gravity and working with Blue Bots in Science. In Social Studies, we are focusing on Economics. Our Kindergarten teachers are so lucky to have these little ones!

FIRST GRADE NEWS
Spring break is around the corner for our first graders! The children deserve a long break for all their hard work! Towards the end of the month we finish up our third quarter for the school year! Time is flying by!
In reading the children are focusing on using correct English grammar, spelling, handwriting, and reading/understanding fiction and non-fiction texts. We are working on fluency and comprehension. Please continue to work with your child’s reading development at home by practicing Dolch words and reading for pleasure each night.
In writing we are working on the writing process, focusing on personal and fictional narratives. The children have come a long way with their writing compared to the beginning of the year. We have worked really hard on adding more details to our writing and making sure we are using transitional words to show sequential order.
We are having a lot of fun this quarter in math! We are focusing on subtraction within 100 and measurement. Please ensure that you are looking over your child’s homework and exit tickets sent home and help them with difficult areas.
Science is full of excitement! We are learning about living and nonliving things and the parts of plants.
We are focusing on American History and Women’s History Month in Social Studies.
The end of the year is around the corner and the students are all working very hard! We are so incredibly LUCKY to have these little ones in our classroom!

SECOND GRADE NEWS
In ELA, we are completing Module 7 in which the topic was Everyone has a Story. The students wrote their own narrative stories about an imaginative character. They will begin Module 8 which is called Time to Grow! The students will read stories about plants with a focus on what plants need to live and grow. Standards covered in this module include identifying plot structure and describing main story elements, retelling a text to enhance comprehension, and comparing and contrasting important details presented by two texts on the same topic or theme. In writing, the students will be writing a procedural text where they will explain the steps to complete an activity.
In math, the students have been busy adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers within 1,000. They learned many different strategies to help them solve the problems. The next unit of study involves using data to create tables and graphs, and then using the different kinds of graphs to solve math problems. Please continue to practice math addition and subtraction facts to strengthen computation accuracy.
In Science, the students were excited to share their habitats with their classmates. Their effort and creativity in the completion of their projects was impressive! The students are currently studying the life cycles of plants and animals. We observed butterflies as they went through the stages of their life cycle. We also enjoyed watching the life cycle of bean plants as they grew.
In Social Studies, the students learned about Presidents Day with a focus on comparing George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. New learning goals in Social Studies will focus on the ways the daily life of people living in Colonial America changed over time and the impact the immigrants had on Native Americans.
We are looking forward to Spring Break and the chance to be with family and friends to recharge for the completion of the school year.

THIRD GRADE NEWS
Third graders went on their very first field trip to the Conservancy of Naples. They had a great time!
Students are still working on their multiplication fluency and mastering their facts songs. Please continue to have your child practice their facts at home. In addition, they have also been learning about strategies to help them solve multiplication and division problems.
In Reading, the students have focused on many standards including comparing two texts, describing connections between stories, and understanding text structure such as sequencing, cause and effect, compare and contrast, problem and solution, etc. In Writing, the students wrote a letter to Mrs. Ledbetter about how to make a difference in our school. In Science, students learned about how light travel and worked in groups to complete a laser light challenge. This help demonstrate that light can travel in a straight line until it strikes another object. In Social Studies, we are finishing up our Market Day advertisements. The students are also learning about maps and continents.
Please continue to read with your child every night. We appreciate all your involvement, encouragement, and support at home!

FOURTH GRADE NEWS
As our fabulous fourth graders head into March and look forward to Spring Break, we finish third quarter. District and Progress monitoring for the 3rd quarter in both reading and math will be communicated as the dates are confirmed. More than ever, it is crucial for students to be in school, all day every day, as much as possible! We are looking forward to seeing our students work their hardest on our upcoming quarter 3 benchmark assessments.
Leader in Me brings us to many peoples’ favorite habit, Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. We have been learning how to perfect this habit during our “Connect for Success” lessons. Spring Break will be the perfect time to focus on family and our personal physical and mental well-being.
In math, the month starts with Unit 13: Data. Students will learn how to determine mode, median, and range of a data set and will solve problems involving numerical data. Later, we move into Unit 14: Geometric Figures by starting out with solving problems involving perimeter and area. Please make sure your student is practicing their multiplication and division facts as these skills are crucial to being successful in math.
Reading this month takes us through Module 8. Students will continue to dig deeper in explaining literary elements and how the theme develops in prose and poetry, identifying figurative language, summarizing across genres, identifying test structures, and how text features contribute to the meaning in informational text.
Students will be focusing in science on changes in matter by identifying some familiar changes that occur with materials due to decay, rust, burning, or cooking. We will also explore some basic forms of energy and investigate how energy has the ability to cause motion or create change.
We are so grateful for your continued support at home. We would like to tell our students they are rising 5th graders; we are very proud of how hard they are working, but we need to stay focused so we can finish quarter 3 strong.
FIFTH GRADE NEWS
Hello, Fifth Grade Families!
Happy Spring!
We have embarked on Module 7 in ELA and have been answering the question, “What role does curiosity play in exploration?” when reading nonfiction pieces about exploring Above, Below, and Beyond. We have been grappling with the text by making predictions while reading, identifying main ideas, and supporting details, and observing text structure.
Students have been researching their leader for the wax museum. We are all eagerly anticipating the day when we will present to the 3rd and 4th graders.
In Science class, we will soon begin our unit on Force and Motion. Ask your student to point out concepts from this unit with items around your home!
In Math, students are starting their Geometry unit and will begin with identifying and classifying various shapes.
As we continue with our Connect for Success lessons, students are considering various occupations and leadership roles they may take on in the future.
Please reach out via ClassTag, email, or phone if you have any questions. It has been a fun year watching our students grow and shine!

Solving a conflict can be tough. Here are 4 steps to make it easier to resolve a conflict between children in your home.
Step One: Calm Down. Use a strategy to self-regulate—deep breathing, counting to 10, or give yourself a break. Identify the feeling you are experiencing.
Step Two: Listen. Take turns and allow each person to share their side of the story. First, hear the information without responding. State the facts.
Step Three: Attack the Problem. Focus on the problem instead of the person. Use “I message. “I feel ____________ when ______________. I need _____________.”
Step Four: Make a Win-Win Plan. Take responsibility for your role in conflict. Apologize for your part. Brainstorm all workable solutions. Agree on a solution that works for everyone and stick with it.
