Mrs. Looney-Kanz & Mrs. Merlo:
This week with Mrs. Looney-Kanz:
Kindergarten: Students will assemble their 3D paper flower sculptures inspired by artist, Livia Cetti. Students will cut out their leaves and painted petals. Students will glue their components to a base.
1st Grade: Students will continue to be inspired Brooklyn artist, Rose Lazar. Students will observe floral still lives and draw from observation. Students will watercolor their floral drawings.
2nd Grade: Students will begin to learn about artist, Yayoi Kusama! Students will begin creating a repeated pattern of printed circles on bright paper. Students will then continue their circle patterns by applying bright marker circles all over their empty space.
3rd Grade: Students will continue to create art inspired by artist, Tyree Guyton. Students will learn about analogous colors and begin choosing their three analogous colors to apply to the empty spaces of their drawings. When finished, students will cut their structures out and glue them to a complimentary colored border.
4th Grade: Students will continue learn about Connecticut artist, Amy Genser. Students are continuing to quill and are beginning to glue their quills to their planet to create landforms.
5th Grade: Students are continuing to learn about California artist, Lili Arnold. Students will observe images and information of native plans from Northern Virginia. Students will sketch and color 3 different native plants that they like. Students will begin to create their design on their foam plate with marker.
This week with Mrs. Merlo:
Kindergarten: Students created characters inspired by the book Mixed and learned about how to create different facial expressions.
2nd Grade: Students learned about Ming Vases and are creating the details and line designs on our ow porcelain paper vase.
4th Grade: Students started a new project inspired by African mask designs and talked about symmetry as we created out template design.

Would your child like to read books and earn free pizza? We are pleased to announce that FDE is partnering with Pupatella Pizza in Leesburg to offer their new "Read for Pizza" program! When a student reads 8 books and fills out the Read for Pizza slip (copies available in the library), they can bring it to Pupatella to redeem for a free Bimbi (Cheese) pizza. Enjoy!
In the next couple of weeks, students in grades 4-5 will celebrate Poetry Month using the read-aloud The One Thing You'd Save, along with a variety of reading incentive and poetry activities.
4th and 5th grade students will also continue participation in our online Book Club, "Chapter Chat," which includes both "Virginia Readers Choice" and "Virginia Reads" books. All information, including the Padlet link, can be found in Mrs. Ricci's Library Schoology Course or HERE.
Students in grades K-3 will continue our Tournament of Books" with selections based on Virginia Readers' Choice and Virginia Reads. This week's read-alouds are Chester Van Chime Forgot How to Rhyme and Digging for Words.
A few reminders:
1. K-3 students: Do you want to earn a FREE BOOK and reading incentive prize to celebrate your reading success? It's almost time to return your April reading calendar to the library! See HERE for more information.
2. Grades 4-5 REACH FOR THE STARS will focus on the genres of Fantasy and Science Fiction, with small groups and Book Talks to encourage reading "deep" and "wide" across all genres. The students have access to all program details in Schoology and will track progress and earn Book Bucks to celebrate reading success!
3. Our library catalog can be found HERE. Please remember that students are welcome to visit the library anytime during the school day-- and even daily to exchange a book(s)! Library staff is pleased to work with students to find "just right" books 🙂
4. Please work with your student to return any books that are overdue. Email and paper reminders are sent as needed. Please contact wendy.ricci@lcps.org with any questions.
Ms. Parcelli & Mr. Holmes:
Hi STARS,
Here's what's happening in music this week!
With Ms. Parcelli:
K - Students will move to music and act out the story, "Tumble Bumble" by Felicia Bond. They will also sing an echo song and create their own steady beat movements.
1st - Students will create their own rhythm patterns and perform them on their own for the class. We will also move to the song "Spring" by Vivaldi.
2nd - Students are continuing to work on Commotion in the Ocean and ensemble playing.
3rd - Students will play the drums along with the story "We Are Water Protectors" by Carole Lindstrom. Then, students will improvise on a barred instrument using the pentatonic scale.
4th - We are wrapping up the Candy Rhythm Composition Project! Students will perform their original piece on an instrument for the class.
5th - We are entering the final stages of the recorder unit. Students will practice a song of their choice in small groups.
Mr. Oakley & Mr. Huddleston:
Take me out to the ball game! Take me out to the crowd! We will be doing our base games unit to practice fielding, batting, and base running with T-ball, softball, baseball, and kickball. Can't wait to see you!
Mrs. Bracaglia & Mrs. Sluss:
In school counseling this week, 3rd grade, and 4th grade students will be focusing on the topics of empathy and coping skills. 5th graders will be learning about empathy by playing a fun empathy escape room. 3rd-5th grader students have finished their career unit and plans have been submitted. Parents, please review this plan with your child and approve it. All plans have been sent via email.
Some 1st grade classes are finishing the third lesson for careers and are working on completing their career plans. 1st grade classes who finished will be moving on to learning about growth mindset. K and 2nd grade have all completed their career plans. Plans will be sent out soon for parent approval! K and 2nd will be moving on to learning about growth mindset.
