Student Expectations for 2020-21 Remote Learning
When students are learning in remote settings during our hybrid instruction or because of a pause of in-person school, they will be expected to:
- All students are expected to follow their daily bell schedule as they normally would if in person.
All students are to log in to Canvas each class period for direct instruction, directions for the activities, feedback from teachers, and/or work time as directed by their teachers. All students are required to contact Chesterton High School if they are having any internet issues. Students should call the attendance office at 983-3731.
All students are to complete work, study, prepare homework, read assignments in texts and online, engage with their teachers and classmates and, essentially, use their time as they would in a typical in-person environment.
Grades will be taken on assigned work, activities, projects, and tests as designated by teachers.
All students are to follow teacher-provided due dates for assignments, projects, papers, homework, and other classwork. Due dates are based on pacing of the curriculum and classroom expectations.
All students are to submit assignments on the due date (unless alternative arrangements have been made with the teacher or per a child’s IEP, ILP, 504, etc.)
- Any student who is participating in any extra-curricular activity is required to attend the entire school day on a daily basis in order to participate in practice or scheduled contests.
- Remote learning students are not required to log in during their assigned SRT period, but each student is encouraged to contact their teacher during this time to receive assistance as these are their office hours.
- All students are accountable for all assignments. Grades will be taken as the teacher directs, and students’ work quality will be important whether in-person or remote.
All students are to turn in assignments via Canvas as directed by their teachers.
- All students are expected to follow the instructions of each teacher on a daily basis.
All students are to communicate regularly and respectfully with teachers and classmates via the virtual platform whether in Google meetings, online discussions, or other teacher-directed means.
All students should sign up for help with teachers (during established office hours) as they are available, if extra help is needed.
All students are to communicate with teachers via email or during online office hours to ask questions, explain extenuating circumstances, or get feedback.
All students are to use feedback and check grades from their teachers on assignments, projects, assessments, and other work as required by teachers.
Student Behavioral Expectations
Throughout the school year, these will be the student behavioral expectations to provide the a safest environment possible at CHS:
Utilize DSC COVID-19 self-assessment tool each morning before leaving for school and report any symptoms immediately to the attendance office at 219-983-3731.
Students must wear masks or face coverings at all times throughout the school day, even when social distancing is possible for Levels 3 and 4 of the DSC Reentry Plan. Masks must be worn over the mouth and nose. Students are encouraged to bring their own masks to school each day, but masks will be provided if one is not available. Masks cannot contain messaging of any kind.
All students must follow teacher instructions regarding disinfecting procedures in between classes. This may include spraying and/or wiping desktop or shared surfaces at the end or the beginning of class.
Students should wash hands frequently using soap and water and/or use hand sanitizer.
Before school, during passing periods, and after school, students are not allowed to loiter in the hallways or in the bathrooms. Students should also walk on the right side of the hallway when traveling between classes during the school day.
In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, all water fountains are turned off. However, the bottle-filling stations are functioning. Please practice social distancing while waiting in line to fill your water bottle.

Having trouble with your HP microphone?
We are seeing quite a few FreshService tickets for CHS student devices with microphone issues. It seems that some of our devices are defaulting to muted microphones. In many cases, this is a setting students can check and fix themselves. If you are asking students to use their microphones, please consider adding to your assignment, discussion, etc., the link to this troubleshooting guide. If you have a tech tips or tech help section on your Canvas homepage, please add this there as well.
