One Body in Christ: Our Spiritual Theme
Spiritual Reflection
By Sheila O’Callaghan
Once again, God is providing another season for us to enjoy. Autumn begins on September 22.
The season of autumn brings many beautiful changes. We already notice a little change in the weather. The days are getting a little cooler, very soon the leaves on the trees will show their real colors. The birds are on their way south. They migrate to warmer countries. The little hummingbird is well on its way, so is the American Goldfinch. Let us not forget the butterflies; the Monarch is well on its way to the caves in Mexico.
Even though the beauty of the summer is fleeting, God still provides so much for us to celebrate.
On September 19, we remember St. Januarius and his friends. They were murdered for their faith in the year 305. One of them was a reader on the Church in the city of Naples, Italy where St. Januarius was bishop. September is the memorial of St. Andrew Kim and companions, martyrs. They bravely dies for their faith. Andrew was the first Korean to become a priest. Let us pray for all Koreans as their country is divided.
The feast of St. Matthew is celebrated on September 21. St. Matthew was one of the apostles. He was a tax collector, but left his job to follow Jesus. Matthew was also called Levi. This name means that he came from a family of priests. He probably studied his religion very well when he was young, which may have helped him understand the teachings of Jesus.
How about challenging yourself to learn all the names of the apostles? You will find them in the Gospel according to Matthew Ch. 10:2-7.
On the 22nd of September the exact middle of the earth will be turned toward the sun. This is called the Autumn Equinox, which means the 22nd will have the same number of hours of daylight as it has of darkness. It is a day of balance. Read about the balance of life in Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, 4, 6-7, 14. Buddhists call this day Higan-e. For them, the equinox is a symbol of peace, equality, and harmony.
Autumn is such an exciting season. There is so much to think about. Find something special you can do to show how much you love Jesus.
Please pray for Fr. Mink, Fr. Jasper’s mom and all the sick of our parish. Our Armed Forces and First Responders need our prayers. Please pray for them.

Tuning In: Six Benefits of Music Education for Kids
- Enhanced language capabilities. Would you like your child to have larger vocabulary and enhanced reading comprehension skills? Studies show consistent music education improves both areas.
- Improved memory. Music education involves a high level of memorization. Students must be able to read music by sight, play the proper notes on their instrument or recall lyrics.
- Strengthened hand-eye coordination. Playing a musical instrument has long been known to enhance dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Powerful study habits. As children grow and are exposed to more rigorous courses of study, time spent reviewing and retaining is essential to success.
- Teamwork. Music is often thought of as a way to foster individual expression. While it definitely is that, music can also teach teamwork.
