First Grade
First grade took our addition and subtraction test this week and also put the finishing touches on our sea animal research paper. We are excited for next week when we will be having a holiday celebration and learning about different holidays around the world!
Second Grade
We discussed how to stay safe during dangerous weather.
In Social Studies we are learning about holiday customs and traditions from around the world.

Thanks to all of the Parents who came out to support the K-5 Winter Show and the Middle School Arts Night. As our Winter Break approaches, we are continuing to learn songs from various countries and to study a variety of composers.
Kestrel Heights is very fortunate to have two after school clubs this year under the direction of Vlad Kary. He is a professional musician with over 15 years of experience in playing and teaching music all over the world. “GUITAR CLUB” on Tuesdays 3:45 - 4:30pm Kestrel Heights Music Room
Both clubs are designed to find out what students are interested in. Instruction is guided accordingly to keep lessons engaging and fun! The goal is to help students find their own path in a musical journey. Once they find it, they will enjoy practicing, listening, and performing music for a lifetime! Students learn about the ukulele or guitar as well as music reading, music theory, chords, scales, and improvisation. This program also strives to help students build self-confidence and self-discipline.

*Students are half way through Quarter 2 projects. They are working with Seesaw in the literature project, Powtoon in the math project, and Google Slides in the Passion project.
*CogAT testing is completed for all students who took the test in the regular administration. Make-up testing will occur next week on Monday-Wednesday.

2018 Spelling Bee
This year, Kestrel Heights School will have a School-wide Spelling Bee on January 26, 2018! Students will be given grade-level word lists to study from over Winter Break. Participation in the School-wide Spelling Bee is optional but encouraged. Look for information from your child's classroom teacher for the Class and Grade-level Spelling Bees happening the week of January 8-12. The top two spellers from each grade level will compete on January 26 in our School-wide Spelling Bee. The Top Speller from Kestrel Heights will be able to compete in the Final Local Spelling Bee at Riverside High School on March 17, 2018!

What a great game! The Hawks UF squad picks up another win in comeback fashion. The Hawks defeated Durham Academy 10-8 after being down 8-3. Coach Kennedy made the proper adjustments down the stretch and the boys and girls executed. Great job boys and girls. 3-0 !

The Hawks came out rusty in the first game of their state showcase, having not practiced since Tuesday. The boys (2-3, 1-0 MSC) came up short against Henderson Collegiate losing by 4 points, 37-33.

What a thriller! The Hawks came out sluggish against fellow Durham charter school, Maureen Joy. The Hawks were able to persevere and come up with the double overtime victory, beating MJ 54-53.

Girls Basketball
The Lady Hawks (0-5) struggled at the showcase this weekend and continue to be held back by injuries. They were defeated by a strong Cardinal Charter team and Henderson Collegiate, both out of the PIAC conference. We know that Coach Edmonds will continue to help these young ladies grow.
