Message From Central Road School
Mrs. Joanna Shostachuk, School Principal
A Note from Mrs. Shostachuk 01/23/2022
Dear Central Road Families,
We had another short yet successful week at school! Students jumped right back into learning while remaining safe too. It is hard to believe that February will be here before we know it. Please continue to remain warm and healthy in the coming weeks.
Thank you for taking the time to read our weekly communication. We are happy to connect together as a strong home-school connection is truly the key to success! We too thank you for your continued support. As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.
Kindest Regards,
Joanna Shostachuk

5 Essentials Parent Survey
Our annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey time is here! This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of our school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness. There are five indicators that can be targeted to improve important student outcomes, including attendance and state test score gains. The 5Essentials Survey asks questions about:
*Effective Leaders
*Collaborative Teachers
*Involved Families
*Supportive Environments
*Ambitious Instruction
This is an important survey that is on the State Report Card. We are required to get 20% of our parents to complete this survey in order to view the results. Please help us by completing the quick 10 minute survey by February 18, 2022! See below for details to take the survey. Thank you in advance for helping Central Road School.

Student Self-Certification Update
Student self-certification cards are no longer expected. If a parent/guardian is sending a student(s) to school, this is your way of indicating the student is healthy enough to be with us at school. We will continue to send students home if they exhibit symptoms while at school. Please only send your child to school if they are healthy! Thank You

Click here for more information and to sign up!
Also, you and your child are invited to attend a virtual family information meeting on Tuesday, January 25 at 6:00pm (Spanish) or Wednesday, January 26 at 6:00pm (English) to learn more about the program and instrument choices. Please watch for an email with the virtual meeting link.
Valentine's Day
Students may pass out Valentine's Day cards as long as each classmate has a card for every student. Just as in previous years, valentines may NOT include anything edible (NO food or candy). Stickers, pencils or other non-edible items may be attached to the valentine as long as one is given to each classmate but this is completely optional.
Student Mental Health Days
In August of 2021, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a new state law that allows students aged 6 to 17 to take up to five days off school for mental or behavioral health reasons. These days do not require a doctor’s note and students may begin using these days starting in January 2022.
The intent of this law is to help parents support children that are experiencing difficulty coping with the increased stress in their lives. If you would like your child to use a mental health support day, follow the same process you use to report any student absence – contact your school’s attendance line to indicate that the student will be using a mental health support day. Mental health support days are counted as excused absences.
Schools are required to contact parents if a student takes two or more mental health support days during the school year. This contact is to conduct a student emotional wellness check and helps the school determine if the student requires mental health support at school.
Health Office News 01-23-2022
As we are in the winter months, please continue to encourage good hand washing. Please also keep your child at home if he/she is feeling ill. We continue to work hard to keep our students learning in person at school each day and appreciate your support. Please note that COVID guidelines change often. We do our best to inform impacted families with the latest information as needed.
For students with any one or more of the following: Students should be fever free for 24 hours without fever- reducing medication and 48 hours after diarrhea/vomiting have ceased, and symptoms have improved.
-fever (100.4 or higher)
-sore throat
-new onset of a persistent, moderate to severe headache
-new cough
/shortness of breath
-vomiting or diarrhea
-new loss of taste or smell
-fatigue from an unknown cause
-muscle or body aches from an unknown cause.
A lab based, RT-PCR test is required for clearance to return to school. MD notes are no longer accepted per directive from The Cook County Department of Public Health. You can return results to me at patela1@ccsd15.net.
Shield Testing UPDATE
Over winter break, the consent you filled out expired through SHIELD. Due to these forms expiring, all students had to be re-opted in. We are asking parents to re-complete the SHIELD Consent Form. This is a new form from the one you previously completed.
*The new form will be valid through June 30th, 2022. You are able to opt your child(ren) in/out at any time by emailing SHIELD@ccsd15.net.
If you would like to re-OPT your child-in, please complete the form attached for each of your children and email it to SHIELD@ccsd15.net.
If you have any questions about SHIELD Testing, please visit our FAQ for answers to some common questions. Should you have any questions, please email Rebecca Latham at lathamr@ccsd15.net.
Students continue to sit 3 feet away from peers masked while learning indoors. Mask wearing outdoors continues to remain optional for students and staff. We also continue to maintain 6 feet of distance when eating during our lunch time as best as possible.
If you have any questions regarding your child's health, you may reach me at patela1@ccsd15.net or at 847-963-5102. We will work together to ensure all guidelines are followed and clearly understood while keeping our students all safe and healthy!
Thank you for your patience.

Recess and Cold Weather
Students generally will continue to go outside for recess every day so they should dress appropriately for the weather. Exceptions are made only when a child brings a doctor's note excusing him/her from outdoor recess. Thank you for sending your child(ren) to school with winter gear as needed. We will continue to enjoy the fresh air as much as we can in the coming weeks.
Cold Weather: Indoor recess is determined based on the following guidelines:
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is below 0°F, all students will remain inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is between 0°-10°F, the preferred procedure is a rotation of 20 minutes for lunch, a 20-minute outdoor recess, and a 20-minute indoor recess. However, at the principal's discretion, students may be kept inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is above 10°F, students will have regular outdoor recess.
D15 Inclement Weather Plan
As the weather begins to become colder, we are writing to share District 15’s 2021-22 inclement weather plan with you. After much discussion, in the event we have significant inclement weather creating unsafe travel conditions or due to extreme cold, we will be utilizing an emergency weather day(s) which we have already built into the school calendar instead of shifting to virtual learning. Please visit the Emergency School Closure/Inclement Weather page of our website.
Should we need to call an emergency/inclement weather day due to hazardous weather conditions, we will notify families through email, text message, and phone calls via our Blackboard Communication system. The information will also be posted on our District and school websites, Facebook, Twitter, as well as the CCSD15 mobile app. Please be aware that if District 15 is closed for in-person learning due to inclement weather, unfortunately, we will not be offering meal deliveries.

THANK A CENTRAL ROAD STAFF MEMBER
Teachers in general love this time of year. Central Road teachers and staff members take the prospect of beginning a new year to a whole new level. They prepare their classrooms, plan lessons, organize schedules, review student records, and think about all of the possibilities the year ahead holds. As much as we recognize their efforts and successes here at school, nothing means more to a teacher or staff member than a kind word from a student or his/her family. As we get the year underway, I invite you to take notice of the things you see your child's teacher do, hear your child's teacher say, or the things you hear your child gush with excitement about related to their teacher. We've included this simple form for you to submit should you feel so inclined to do so. Children in full day school spend more of their waking day with their teacher than they do with their parents. We thank you for entrusting your child with us! This is going to be a great school year.
Moving D15 Forward Community Meeting-DATE CHANGE
As part of the Moving 15 Forward initiative, the District has scheduled community meetings at each of our schools. Central Road's visit is tentatively set for Tuesday, February 22. During our meeting, an overview of the proposal will be presented, and specifics on proposed changes to our school will be shared. Additional information will be shared as we finalize plans, but we wanted to send a Save the Date in hopes all interested families can add the date to their calendar.
Community and/or PTA Information
Talent Show Update -All acts have been collected via video submissions and will be shared via YouTube at our live premiere event on Friday, January 28th. We thank our PTA for putting this together! A Note from our Crossing Guard
Welcome back, everyone and Happy New Year!!!! Now that we have started new year, I'd
like for everyone to think about your winter driving to and from school. Driving conditions
can be very dicey as they recently have been and everyone's footing, when walking, is also
tricky. With snow and ice along the curbs, it leaves a little less parking room. Please avoid
pulling over in “No Parking" areas to drop off and pick up your children. Winter has only just begun around here so more precautions need to be used to keep all of us safe, especially the kids. One thing I have noticed since we have been back is a tremendous number of drivers stopping right in the crosswalk. This is not only preventing the children from being able to
cross the street in a timely fashion, it is also against the law and has been for quite a few
years. Please let's not lose focus! Thank you for your support.
