Negley Mission Statement
Ahoy Navigator Parents!
1009 strong!
We packed a lot of learning into 3 days - and had lots of Grandparents join us for lunch on Friday. We had over 525 grandparents sign in to have lunch with their grandchild(ren). Our alternate lunch schedule helped us to host this event. A huge thank you to my front office staff for a seamless check-in system! Thank you to our PTA volunteers for helping us sell tickets and help in the lobby! We did it with your extra help!
Please continue working with your child on their reading fluency and math fact fluency! Teachers are seeing a difference!
Our Boosterthon Fundraiser begins in full on Friday. See below for how to register! Our goal this year is $50,000! What happens if we meet our goal? It's a surprise for now - but it will be fun!
Happy Sailing!
Captain Crowther
Take a look at what we've been up to!
READING PASSAGES AND MATH GAMES FOR THE WEEK!
READING PASSAGES FOR THIS WEEK:
One way you can practice fluency with your child is the adult reads the text first and models fluent reading with appropriate phrasing and expression for the text. Then the student reads the same text to the adult while the adult provides assistance and encouragement. The student continues to reread the text until the reading shows signs of fluency (words are read correctly, reading is fairly smooth, the reader uses punctuation to guide pauses and voice inflections). This usually takes three to four readings.
MATH GAME FOR THIS Month:
Math Fluency: The biggest thing students need to develop fact fluency is consistent, frequent opportunities to practice. The more students practice their facts, the more quickly they transfer from short-term to long-term memory.
For the next month, play a fun game of Math War with a deck of cards. You can split the deck or use a full deck for each person (for younger students, split the deck and do 10 cards each at a time. Add more cards as they get faster).
Each person turns over the top card from their pile and the first to add (or multiply) them gets to keep both cards. The winner is the person who has the most cards. Write the number on a piece of paper. When you are finished, have your child work on adding up the numbers in their head!
HAVE FUN AND CELEBRATE YOUR CHILD GETTING BETTER AND FASTER IN READING AND MATH!

Library News
Welcome to a wonderful year in the library! We have a new library team this year, Ms. Marcionetti remains the Librarian this year but I am joined by a new Library Tech, the awesome Ms. Wheeler. Together, we are so excited to welcome your children to another amazing year in the library. We have so many fun plans for this year.
Students have regular library classes where they will have a fun lesson, activity and check out books. Students can also exchange books before school and with library passes in their classroom. Ms. Marcionetti will also be running a book club for 4th and 5th grade students with Ms. Bell this fall so look for information on that soon. Kinder - 5th grade classes will soon be coming home with reading incentive programs where students earn prizes/parties for reading awesome books. So many awesome things to look forward to and I will send more information about these in the weeks to come.
4th Grade Library Helper applications will be sent out at the end of next week once I have been able to talk to all classes about the program. 4th Grade Library Helpers is a leadership program for 4th grade students where they dedicate one assigned morning a week to come to school at 7:05 and work 20 minutes in the library before school. 4th Grade Helpers decorate the library, help us get ready for book fair, help get materials ready for lessons, organize, dust, deliver book carts, etc. This is an awesome opportunity to gain leadership experience especially if you would like to be a House Leader in 5th grade. Students will have a week to return their applications and then assigned mornings will be sent out after that with a start date. Look for applications at the end of next week!
Have a wonderful reading weekend everyone! Looking forward to another great year in the library!!
TECHNOLOGY PROTECTIVE PLAN
Each child at Negley is issued a chromebook laptop to use at school. This is their responsibility to take really good care of and most of our students do a great job! However, accidents can happen no matter how careful we are. Please consider purchasing technology insurance for your child's school computer.
2022-2023 Technology Protective Plan is currently open.
New for this year: Plans must be purchased 60 days from the enrollment date!!!!!
For students that start school during the first week, protection plans must be purchased by Oct 18, 2022.
After the first week, protection plans must be purchased within 60 days of the student's enrollment date as listed in TEAMS.
Here is a link to all the details of the device protection plan coverage and a link to pay for the protection plan if you did not sign up or pay for the plan during online registration:

Of course we will work with ANY student who comes to us for support. Dividing our campus like this allows us to work with families, which we believe is very important!
We will share more information to share with you about our program in the upcoming weeks.
Be a Mentor - Change a Life!
A Call to Mentor
The Hays CISD mentoring program pairs adults with student mentees in a proven, effective practice of making a difference in the lives of students. In our ongoing commitment to build student self-efficacy Hays CISD is proud to announce a renewed call for mentors to strengthen student connectedness and develop strong relationships.
Length and Time of Commitment
We ask for a 1 year commitment to meet with a student once a week for 30 minutes, during the school day (during the student’s lunch period will be the preferred time).
What do mentors do? Mentors provide constant encouragement and emotional support for their students. Mentors help students to:
- Accept responsibility
- Use good study habits
- Make positive choices
- Learn problem solving skills
- Have better peer relationships
Good mentoring relationships require a secure mentor training process. Prior to being assigned to a campus and matched with a mentee, all mentors must register with our VIP’s volunteer system, receive a Hays CISD volunteer ID badge and complete all levels of the onboarding process.
Requirements - How to become a mentor: There are only four (4) requirements to become a mentor:
- Consent to a Hays CISD Criminal Background Check by registering through our VIP’s volunteer portal. (Level 1)
· If you have previously volunteered within Hays CISD, click Established Volunteers. If you are registered as an established volunteer, please go into your account and designate an interest in “Mentoring” to update your account.
· If you are NEW to Hays CISD or have not completed the VIPS process, click this link: New Volunteers
2. Once you are approved, the VIP’s system will notify you to complete an online self-paced training module.(Level 2)
3. Once your level 2 responses are recorded, the VIP’s system will auto-generate a link to register for one of our 1.5 hr. in-person Onboarding/Training sessions at the PAC happening Sept.13th – 20th. (Level 3 )
4. Upon completion of in-person training, a Mentor Training Certificate will be issued and approved mentors will connect with the campus School Counselor/Campus Mentor Liaison for matching with a mentee and review check-in procedures. (Level 4)
Why mentoring?
Research repeatedly shows that having a mentor helps a child to be more successful in school. Children are not the only ones whose lives can be changed by mentoring. For many mentors, the rewards of reaching out to another and building a close, trusting relationship are great, including an increase in personal enrichment, happiness and self-knowledge. In fact, mentoring benefits all of society: healthy, educated and nurtured children tend to grow up to be productive adults and responsible parents. They may even grow up to be mentors themselves.
Thank you for saying “yes” to mentoring!
