5th Grade Physical Education Newsletter
And We're Off!
The 5th graders are now rotating through unit skills with each P.E. teacher. The first round is Archery, Rec Games, Volleyball, and Basketball. Each day they begin with a short jog and a combination of strength and flexibility exercises and then move onto their unit activities.
Archery
Archery, taught by Ms. Brummer under the trees in front of the Middle School, works on individual, partner, and team competitions such as Ladder, King/Queen, Last Man Standing, Tic-Tac- Toe, Gold Medal Girl and Gold Medal Boy. Each day students challenge themselves to beat their personal best and many students are doing just that. Our top score goes out to Will Vangergriff who scored of 33 out of 33!!! Congrats Will!
King, Queen, Prince and Princess winners!
Recreational Games
A unit taught by Coach Adams, the students play a variety of individual and team games each day. Moving away from the skills based curriculum that 1st - 4th does, the 5th graders in this unit have a lot of opportunities to open conversations regarding sportsmanship, strategy, valuing opponents and how they handle winning and losing. This unit challenges students physically, emotionally and mentally through cooperative and competitive games.
Volleyball
In the eight day volleyball unit, Coach Ross spends 2 days working on forearm passing and serving. The next 6 days are then spent playing actual volleyball games. The kids have been doing great, and have had many long rallies!
Basketball
In Coach Williams 5th grade basketball unit, groups are playing a co-ed round robin 4 on 4 tournament. Teams will be seeded according to their record and will play for the championship. The 4 on 4 format is a lead-up to the full court 5 on 5 that will be played the last two days of class.
