Read for the Game
The SCEOC is again sponsoring the "Read Your Way to the Game" contest for all K-8 graders in the state. A reading log was sent home with your child on Oct. 3. If you read along with the whole school book, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, then you have read all 6 books. Children can enter more than once so for every 6 books, send in a log and your child's name will be entered to win a chance at winning 4 tickets to the USC/Clemson game. Every entry also gives you child's teacher a chance to win one of five teacher prizes of $500! If we have 70% of our students participate, we have a chance to win $2000 for our Learning Commons. The deadline for turning in the forms is Friday, Nov. 7! Please help us reach our goal of 70% participation. Reading with your child is one of the best ways to instill a love of reading!!!
Just One Book!
We will be reading Beverly Cleary's, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, as our whole school book this year. We will begin on Oct. 3. You can use this book as the six books needed for the Read for the Game contest. Each day there will be a trivia question from the chapter read the previous night. Your child will have a chance to win a prize in their classroom! What a fun was to spend family time! You may find you enjoy the book as much as your child! One father couldn't wait to see what happened and took the book to the dear stand to read!
Global Read Aloud
We are again participating in the Global Read Aloud. Ms. Stepp will be reading Lauren Castillo's picture books to K and first graders. We will be connecting with classes all over the USA to talk about our predictions, reading behaviors, and about where we each live.
Pennies for Books Beyond Our Borders
As part of the Global Read Aloud, we are partnering with the Palms and Souls organization to help build a library in the community center of Jocotenango, Guatemala. Scouts can bring in coins each day beginning October 3-Nov. 11. We will then have the children choose book titles they would like to send to the boys and girls there. This is a great way to give to others and support literacy at the same time!
Book Fair Report
A huge thank you to all of you who supported the book fair in September! We had a very successful book fair and were able to clear $3025.00 to use to buy books and supplies for the learning commons. We couldn't provide the wonderful resources and literature for our scouts without your help! Thanks to the PTO volunteers who helped each day, to the Grandparents who came to shop and those who attended the movie night to kick off our whole school reading of The Mouse and the Motorcycle!
